JACKIE ROGERS JUNIOR = KURT KOBAIN

POP CULTURE CONFESSION

Now that I'm far from campus and the Nirvana years I can speak my mind. When I first saw Kurt Kobain I had no idea what sex he was. I saw the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video and was totally confused. I really thought it was a joke band.

Worse.... Kobain reminded of Hollywood lunatic Jackie Rogers Junior, (played by Martin Short on SCTV).

Its not entirely out of line. I once confused the lead singer of Sugar Smack to be an ugly woman. This quasi-Led Zeppelin band featured a long haired girly man in skin tight pink leather pants. It turned out to be a really gangly guy with bright pink hair. He was leaping around so fast on stage that I couldn't tell what he was.... a male or a female. Now before I get off the track......

Jackie Rogers Junior is the worlds first albino superstar. This live track from a video tape release, "Martin Short Goes to Hollywood" is a bit silly but no sillier than some of the campy Vegas/Hollywood stars we've endured over the years.

THE BABYSHAMBLES - BACK AGAIN

THE BABYSHAMBLES - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Yes, the band is still together and have released a new album, "Albion" but where do they stand? I have no idea if I will ever see these guys live because of lead singer Pete Dohertys drug busts. I have no idea if he can even leave the UK.

Last winter Pete dazzled the press with his back to back jail arrests, (once getting arrested twice in one day just hours apart.). There was another sighting of him dodging the press as he scaled over a 10 foot high gate with the grace of a cat.

These guys are in the NME press quite a bit. I don't see a whole lot of coverage of them in American rock magazines... and thats a shame. These guys are really great to listen to. We do get some mention of Pete Doherty here whenever model girlfriend Kate Moss is mentioned. She has had a similar drug bust as well and this has brought the modeling profession once again to the front page.

I'd like to see a video for, "A Certain Kind of Romance" which is another hypnotic brilliant effort.

MEAN STREETS - ORIGINAL TRAILER 1973

Here is an update to the, "Mean Streets" by Martin Scorsese post I made a little while ago. I found the original film trailer. This is excitement and somewhat of a rare find.

They had to scramble the words a bit because the original dialogue is a very coarse. Its worth seeing. In fact, it is one of my favorite films of all time. This was released before, "The Godfather" and was one of the first REAL gangster films to portray organized crime in Little Italy. This film was a very big deal when it was first released.

Film buffs liked it because of the raw performances from Harvey Keitel and Robert DeNiro.

JIMMY WALKER - THE RISE OF BROTHER WALKER

WHAT IS THIS MAN ON?

I want some.

"The Pope is my man....... the Rolling Stones are my boys"
Jimmy Walker

This star of, "Good Times" delivered some serious laughs in the 70's. In fact, during the show's heyday he was untouchable. His portrayal of Chicago's J.J. Evans was goofy and downright hysterical. Then he disappeared.

My father caught him on tour about 18 months ago in Muskegon, Michigan, (which is my hometown and its very small). He appeared on a comedy stage called, Nino's Italian Restaurant and delivered a great set. Other than that you never hear of this guy. He is amazingly talented but i don't know where he hides out.

Whenever I see, "Brother Walker" on television he is always hopped up like this.

Here is what fans have said......

"Brother Walker is great..."

QUADROPHENIA - THE MOTION PICTURE

THE VOICE OF AN ANGRY GENERATION

1979 was an odd time. Punk Rock had fizzled and from its ashes came the rebirth of SKA. American bands were translating the Punk message to more radio friendly New Wave. New York was taking the punk message and splintering off the No Wave sound. MTV was about to bring some of that energy into every living room in the country.

The WHO released their epic rock motion picture. "QUADROPHENIA". This movie showcased a slice of time in the UK centered around the early 60's. It was a violent time of social and musical change of Mods vs Rockers through the eyes of a young schizophrenic named Jimmy Cooper. The music isn't what you think it might be. Its American doo wop and the Quadrophenia soundtrack is chopped up and inserted into the film somewhat unevenly. The dialect is distinctly tied to the neighborhood of Sheppards Bush so it is somewhat hard to distinguish at times. All in all this film is highly entertaining.

The album was re-introduced to American audiences with a tour. Keith Moon had already OD'd and was replaced by Kenny Jones. This tour became infamous for its stampede where some kids in the audience were trampled to death as fans rushed the stage. This led to some controversy over the "Festival Seating" arrangements in big arena concerts. The film promotion was shown to the audiences and its reception was luke warm. This was to become a great cult film in later years and a college campus favorite.

Quadrophenia had the same problem when the studio album was released in America. The 1973 tour was often interupted with Roger Daltrey having to explain the meaning and significance of the songs. But the sound system was poor and people in the audience had to strain their ears to hear what he was saying. In certain aspects this tour was a flop. But musically it was a brilliant acheivement.

Director Frank Roddam added a real urban direction to the film. Guitarist Pete Townshend originally wanted the characters to sing their own parts as in the film, "Tommy". I would have liked to have seen that version as well. It would have been strange but I think it also may have taken the severity out of the premise.

Keith Moon actually brought one of his bodyguards with him to the set. He was drunk and wanted to direct the film with Roddam as a team. He died shortly after this encounter. I was glad that this film only had the direction of one main artist. Its a strong peice that holds up quite well especially when you compare it next to what passes for entertainment today.

QUADROPHENIA - MOVIE TRAILER - 1979

OASIS - NEED A LITTLE TIME TO WAKE UP WAKE UP !!!!!

STARK BUT POWERFUL VISUALS

This video for me really captures something about that song I never knew existed. Bare bones, knuckles down to the table stress and dispair. The daylight peeking into the darkened room spells it out. There is some beauty in its seclusion or in one being excluded.

The shots are all timed roughly to be the same size in most sequences. This isn't necessary to tell the story but it helps. This has no happy conclusion to it. This video just ends leaving you as the viewer to fend for yourself.

I liked the people who come to the door looking in through the keyhole. They have no way of knowing if their presence is recognized or not. Still they keep coming en masse. The bandmates of Oasis stay holed up in their room oblivious to their pleads to keep it down.

This clip has tremendous energy.

OASIS - WHATS THE STORY MORNING GLORY?

SID VICIOUS - THE GREAT ROCK AND ROLL SWINDLE

THE GREAT ROCK AND ROLL SWINDLE

The tragic thing about the movie, "The Great Rock And Roll Swindle" is that you can only do it once....... What a catastrophe this project was.... If you never read any books on Malcom McLaren and the punk movement you should pick up, "Londons Dreaming" by Greil Marcus.

Even if you've never read anything on punk music then you can always watch, "The Filth and the Fury". This pretty much explains what the big news was all about.

Malcom McLaren and his lawyers buzzed through the offices of the record companies and held them responsible for signing up his act. There was advance money of course. But where he really cashed in was by keeping all the likenesses of the group and capitalizing off of license fees.

Still - for as influential as the Pistols were they really didn't have any books, movies or videos in America until the mid-80's. This was long after the fire was out. Sid Vicious was already dead, the sounds changed and that piece of history was in the past.

Vicious stands out of that movement because he was a character of himself. He was a symbol for the manufactured Pistols. So making a toy of him becomes somewhat normal.

This scene in the "Great Rock and Roll Swindle", (just re-released finally after 20 years) is in the close of the film. It was shot in France at the Olympia (home of Eddie Barclay a famous French entertainer personality). The woman in the front row is Ann Beverly, ("I Can't Believe Thats My Sid Up There"). She died shortly after this was shot of a heroin overdose. But not before giving Sid, (her own son) a lethal dose of heroin causing him to OD as well.

"MAUDLIN'S ELEVEN"

This is a parody of the classic Rat Pack film, "Oceans Eleven". This was shown on the comedy show SCTV as the "Movie of the Week". It stars all the Vegas style characters from the skit, "The Sammy Maudlin Show" including Sammy Maudlin, William B, Bobby Biman and his kid brother Skip Bitman.

Its a bit over the top - sort of like the original staring Frank Sinatra. I rented the original "Oceans Eleven" a few years ago and actually prefer this parody a lot more.

There are four parts to this. The last part of part 4 ends abrubtly but there is enough comedy in here to keep you going.

SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK - END OF THE CENTURY

Sigue Sigue Sputnik is a British pop-cyberpunk band that achieved moderate fame in the mid- to late 1980s, when the song "Love Missile F1-11" hit the pop charts around the world. "Love Missile F1-11"'s success was due in part to the song's use in the cult-hit movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Led by former Generation X bassist Tony James, the band created a unique style of new wave music by layering vocals, yelps, guitar riffs, electronic sound effects, and short samples over pulsating synthesizer bass lines.

This band got off on a great launch pad in the Ferris Buellers Day Off movie. It was played extensively during the long summer of 1986 in the clubs. The album was somewhat confusing. In between tracks the listeners were promised amazing products and services from the "Sputnik Corporation". This album was odd.

The songs were very catchy. They consisted of the familiar two tone riffs that made Generation X famous. The album was packaged up to look like a Transformer toy with robot graphics. But here is the one thing I never suspected.

MEAN STREETS - REQUIRED SCORSESE VIEWING

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.

This is one of my favorite Scorsese films of all time. MEAN STREETS. This is low end living in an upscale town - LITTLE ITALY, NYC.

" On the surface, when you first take a stab at Martin Scorsese’s intensely autobiographical classic “Mean Streets”, it looks like a jumbled mixture of music, showoff filmmaking techniques, half realistic, half amateurish acting, and crazy nighttime visuals...."

GENERATION X - LIVE ON THE BOLAN SHOW - 1976

WOA WAIT A MINUTE... Marc Bolan had a tv show? pffft hehe

sorry kids....

But that actually made me laugh. My girlfriend adored Marc Bolan and painted this portrait of him being this masculine nordic God. But looking at this clip is far from convincing.

Get a load of Billy Idol bopping around to that shakey camera work. Nice Job.

This song, "Your Generation" is a real bulldozer when its cranked up with heavy bass. But here in this clip it comes off very tinny and somewhat flimsy. This if from the first album..... I think. That is if Chrysallis Records is telling us the truth. This could have been a single and ended up on their second album, (you know how that goes).

The shirt that Billy Idol wears here makes a few more appearances on a couple of bootleg lps. I recognized it as soon as I saw this clip. I had no idea there was television footage of this song.

GENERATION X - YOUR GENERATION

ANDY KAUFMAN - "I'M FROM HOLLYWOOD -- AND THIS IS SOAP !!"

Andy Kaufman - Beloved Star of "Taxi".... Spills His Guts

This is a clip from Kaufman's wrestling odyssey from the late 70's. Over the years it was lost and forgotten about. This was from the creative minds of Kaufman and his agent, Bob Zemuda.

According to which biography you read this was all staged. In the Milos Foreman film, "Man on the Moon" this whole wrestling thing was totally exposed as a hoax. Bad guy wrestler Jerry Lawler makes a cameo appearance - playing himself - acknowledging that this entire thing was a stunt.

It seemed pretty convincing at the time. This was long before the WWF and when wrestling was divided into different territories throughout the US. The broadcasts which made this whole thing seem real were very low budget. They had very low production values and the venues themselves were actualy very small.

What is interesting about this was that by this point of his life Kaufman didn't seem to care very much about money. He just wanted to cause some trouble and make a few more enemies while here on Earth, (he died of cancer shortly after). This was over the top entertainment. But what is really important here is that the butt of the joke was really the audience.

It was an elaborate put on.

This whole wrestling stunt with upsetting the deep south and wrestling women on the Merv Griffen Show gained him mountains of hate mail. This later led to Saturday Night Live producer Lorn Michaels to have a vote on live television whether to keep him on and send him packing -- never to return to the show again. The results were in favor of kicking Kaufman off the show for good. I think he only rated 23%.

From there his career spiraled downward -- permanently. He made the film, "Heart Beeps" and it was a commercial failure. He would appear on David Letterman a few more times before becoming bedridden.

DAVID LETTERMAN - RICHARD SIMMONS - GETTING STEAMY

I love these clips with Richard Simmons. He is always pitching his latest health "gizmo" on the, "Late Night with David Letterman Show" usually with disasterous results.

My favorite one was when Richard brought, "Deal a Meal" on the show. David Letterman waited until Richard took all the cards out and set them up and then he blurted out.....

"....and we'll be right back!"

Richards face dropped. And I hit the floor. THAT IS GOOD TV !!

THE BLOW MONKEYS - DID ANYONE CATCH THIS?

Dr. Robert.

(Yeesh)

My first reaction to this video was ... man.. that is the GAYEST GAY GUY I've ever seen. I didn't even know if he was gay or not but thats what I thought. This guy made Boy George look like Charles Bronson.

He got the title "Doctor" when he was on campus. People used to go to him with all their problems. He was good at counseling people and the term stuck --- becoming permanent.

It turns out Dr. Robert was married when he shot this.... I think. I had read something about that on the BBC web site. This song was catchy even though I didn't want to admit it at the time. Now its on VH1 Classic and gets occasional airplay.

This song totally confused me. I had no idea why it was being shown or what my reaction was supposed to be. Then I sort of forgot about it. For years.

It turns out this song is loaded with drug references, (no pun intended). I laughed too at the fact that this guy looks like one of my psychopathic ex-agents. Its rather hard to keep a straight face as I watch it even today.

LLOYD COLE - WHATS MY PROBLEM?

During the age of "SPY" Magazine you could find Lloyd Cole doing liquor ads. He would pose by a two seater table looking fashionably bored in SOHO, NYC. Painfully hip, wonderfully dresssed and very well read Cole set the pace for the literary set.... The ad worked on me... I WANTED TO BE THAT GUY.

No doubt, I shared many of Cole's problems but I would settle for nothing less than to also be as complicated. As one year collided into another these songs from the album mainstream burned a permenant place in my consciousness. I forgot that this album has been a part of me since 1987.

Other notable tracks on this release include, "Sean Penn Blues" and "Mr. Malcontent". I liked this album as soon as I heard it. I saw the album cover and I knew it was going to be significant before I even bought it. Cole never really put his face on an album cover before this release. "Easy Peices" and "Rattlesnakes" only offered artwork on their covers. But this one really struck me as a dramatic release. And it was a black and white shot which instantly communicated drama to me.

I was right. This guy was pretty dramatic.
And brilliant.

THIS IS GLORIOUS

Vitality driven, imaginative, and wonderfully over the top. This track really delivers. This track screams fun fun fun.

"Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Noise?"

I remember having to be dragged into the theaters to see "Ghost" and "Dirty Dancing" and being bored with the experience. I would dump my dates off back home by creating an excuse -- hop back in my car and drive straight to the Nectarine Ballroom. By the time I would get past security and check my coat I would hear this track on the turntable. The thunderous driving beat would numb the floor..........

.... and I was HOME!

THE REPLACEMENTS - TAKIN A RIDE -- (MAN !!!)

MERRY CHRISTMAS !!! TO HARD ROCK FANS EVERYWHERE!

This is a rare clip from the "Sorry Ma Forget To Take Out The Trash Tour!" - AND THE BAND OF COURSE IS THE REPLACEMENTS!!!!

"Takin a Ride" - has a nostalgic feel for me. I get weepy. I remember the good times. Whazzat you say?

In my youth I ran around with a bunch of no good hooligans and I loved every second of it. There were about 18 months of pure bliss that I fondly remember. Its a miracle we didn't wrap our cars around telephone poles although we certainly backed into enough of them. One of my buddies jammed a coke bottle into his mouth nearly taking out all four of his upper teeth. We found this somewhat hilarious.

Youth, (and life for that matter) is a series of choices. There are some you regret and then there are some you wish you could live over again. If I had to choose to find the love of my life or run around my gang -- I would have to choose the later. After all my buddy Myles H was crazy and he actually drove his car through a golf course at night. It was better than the Cedar Pointe Amusement Park. I enjoyed living like that.

So when I hear, "Takin' A Ride" it brings back memories. Great ones. If had continued on that way I would have ended up like television drunk personality Bill Bonds. Who knows, it might have been worth it.

But I never thought I was ever going to see this song performed live - especially near the same period when it first came out. Check out the clear close up image of Bob Stinson working the fret board. I never saw footage of him playing before. This is friggen great.

SCTV - CHRISTMAS WITH ED GRIMLEY

ED GRIMLEY - AND CHRISTMAS -- WHAT A COMBO

This little gem was first broadcast in 1982 on SCTV and orignally run on SCTV. The SCTV program was a series of skits that portrayed a fictional television network. But you knew that already right?

This was Ed's first character appearance. There were some other characters he brought to the show that were less popular, (JOhnny Nucleo for one.. ) but Martin Short was most famous for Ed Grimley.

This character was later taken to Saturday Night Live for a few more hilarious rounds. It inspired a cartoon on NBC which was actually pretty good. It was entitled, "The COmpletely Mental Misadventuers of Ed Grimley. Martin Short would make live appearances in between cartoons and do funny bits.

He had aspirations to play in the New York Philharmonic with a musical triangle of all things. On Saturday Night Live Tina Turner actually blew into his apartment when he left his window wide open. He had nothing to feed his guest when she suddenly "popped in". All he had in his refridgerator was onions.

You get the idea...... he was very offbeat. And hilarious.

I'm sure you've seen it. In case you've lived in a space station for the past 6 years here's the skinny.

Tagline: A Tribute to the Original, Traditional, One-Hundred-Percent, Red-Blooded, Two-Fisted, All-American Christmas...

Plot Outline
Ralphie has to convince his parents, teachers, and Santa that a Red Ryder BB gun really is the perfect gift for the 1940's.

Plot Synopsis: Ralphie, a young boy growing up in the '40's, dreams of owning a Red Rider BB gun. He sets out to convince the world this is the perfect gift. But along the way, he runs into opposition from his parents, his teacher, and even good 'ol Santa Claus himself.

I don't know what they pay the programming director at TBS Network or if they pay him at all. Maybe they pay him off with Pot or LSD. This is crap holiday entertainment. I can see running it once TOPS. But you don't run it back to back for 24 hours year after year. This format can only be entertaining if you ate lead paint chips as a kid and have alzheimers disease. This is broadcasting in its lowest form.

What a sham. What a cowardly network.

THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS - WORLD OUTSIDE ANYONE?

THE BOOK OF DAYS &
WORLD OUTSIDE

Great albums.... if you can find them. I had to locate this one Amazon.com. CDUniverse.com has become somewhat of an enemy of mine for trivializing great and talented bands from the past be re-issuing early releases and then cutting out all later releases altogether.

This song and video deserves some credit or at the very least to be remembered. Its the last studio offering from The PSychedelic Furs in 1991. It got very little airplay while radio stations celebrated the dreaded and forgettable fare from the HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM song by Crash Test Dummies and anything by Toad The Wet Sprocket.

The Psychedelic Furs in comparrison WERE A MUSICAL AND ARTISTIC WUNDERKIND. There is no other band who has really touched upon the raw nerve endings of emotion except maybe The Smiths.

Even when compared to Morrissey and the Smiths this band was very different. Instead of being just a pop presence this band had a way of getting into your memory and taking permanent root.

THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS - UNTIL SHE COMES

FLESH FOR LULU - THEY'LL GIVE YOU A HEART ATTACK

LONG LIVE THE NEW FLESH

They'll never get confused with being prolific or a political musical presence. But then again so what... this is entertainment. Think of how many other bands out there..... AC/DC for one, ("Loose Lips, Sink Ships etc.) pump out trite lyrics just for the sake of rhyming, (Def Leppard comes to mind very quickly). I like to think there are deeper things going on in these songs but then again, I could be imagining things.

This song got big for one peculiar reason, John Hughes, "Some Kind Of Wonderful". This film about youth growing up in Illinois of all places paved the way to radio airplay for Flesh For LuLu. I liked them because they had cool hair. I didn't give a monkeys hiney that the Hughes film said or stood up for my generation. Hughes views on youth culture in the 1980's always totally confused me. Either kids in Illinois were really that diversified and screwed up fashionwise or they were clueless about how to proceed. In either case, as a film maker he fails at his job in trying to get me to sympathize with any of his characters. I just don't understand them and have stopped trying.

I don't see Flesh for LuLu fitting into ANY of the characters in the movie, "Some Kind Of Wonderful", (the title goes to post-hippie band sensation Grand Funk Railroad.... see? It gets weirder).........

Regardless of where they fit into American culture one thing is for sure. These guys were very interesting. I liked their hair and their clothes. I ran out and got boot braces like the ones they wore for my Doc Martens. I found their sound to be very catchy in the way that I also like The Dandy Warhols. And they were fun to listen to.

They weren't afraid of human emotion either -- which is nice.

ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN - LIVE

MAKE ME SHINE

I'm going to act like a big record company here for a moment and post the WRONG album cover for this track. My reasons are just as selfish as theirs. My reason may be the same exact reason why they do it. I posted this pic because I think you should run out and buy it. Heh.......

Its not coming out until next year, Jan. 23rd to be exact. I can't tell you exactly what is going to be on this album but my guess is that it is going to be pretty amazing stuff. There are some Echo and the Bunnymen tracks that are finally being released from their web site juke box, (Rollercoaster for one can be found in the box set). I'm still looking for Antelope.... which is based off of Bring on the Dancing Horses. Its powerful driving unrelenting sound makes that song a must have.

I came across this live version of, "Make Me Shine" by accident. I had no idea this was floating around. It is one of the better tracks off the, "Flowers" release. The details for the musical narrative in the intro are totally botched up but the rest of the song is handled nicely. This could have been a rehearsal. If this was a live track the band would be covered with fog and mysterious lights..... and I wouldn't have them any other way.

This was Ian McCulloch's first solo release. Ex- Echo and the Bunnymen frontman McCulloch would go on to release Mysterio while Echo fell apart. This was partly due to the fact that the drummer DeFrittes plowed his motorcycle into a tree and killed himself. Rumors floated that he tore his own arm off. I had no idea -- this was when I was hitting the clubs pretty heavy. They wouldn't cover stories like this in traditional rock magazines so we had to go on heresay.

Then McCullochs solo albums disappeared. You can get these on Amazon I'm sure but I haven't looked. Echo and the Bunnymen got another lead singer and came out with Reverberation.... which is a pretty decent effort but it definately missed McCullochs mysterious vocals.

This video is nice too. I sure wish I knew who the heck directed it. "Proud to Fall" was one of my favorite songs on this besides, "Horses Head". To me those two singles alone would have convinced me as a record exec to keep cranking this stuff out. It was interesting and made you think. It was melodic.

Instead Rap took over MTV, then Grunge, and then ... oddly Grunge Metal Rap dominated NYC radio and this gem became lost.

But don't let it get lost again..... enjoy.
