ANDY KAUFMAN - THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL - 1977

"I TRUSTED YOU....."

The Midnight Special featured rock acts from the 70's. It was on late at night. Most of the bands that they featured were already dinosaurs. I had a hard time caring about anything they featured.

Apparently Andy Kaufman did too. He hated a lot of what passed for entertainment during his time. He was largely influenced by the PUnk Rock movement. So when he came on NBC or ABC he did a form of comedic vandalism.

This got a lot of reaction. People either laughed along with him or people got out of their seats and yelled and cursed their television sets. My father fit that criteria as he hated Kaufman.

My father pulled me aside and said, "Son.. do you think he is funny?" and I replied that I did. He then confided, "I think he's queer !!... they shouldn't let those people on tv !!!"

The 70's were a very different time. One has to keep that in mind. But the best part about Kaufman is that you kept hoping that the joke would soon be over. He kept it going over the top for as long as possible. Sometimes people would yell and throw stuff. He liked all the reactions... either they love him or hate him its all great.....

THE SHOCKMASTER - SHOCKS THE WORLD, (whats left of it)

"ALL I GOTTA SAY IS THAT.... HE IS GOING TO SHOCK THE WORLD.... !!!!!"

The Shockmaster wants to rule the world..... with Sid Vicious.. not the dead punk star.. but the lame wrestler... Hey its important to have goals, no matter how shitty they are. You know?


The Shockmaster sucks on many levels. First, he falls through the wall and his helmet falls completely off his head. Next, he talks with a gruff "Darth Vader-esque" sound without the use of any vocal apparatus. Thats his real voice. He comes off like a man with emphasema. I have no idea what kind of robe that is on his shoulders but that sucks too.

Yes. its painful to watch. The production values are pretty bad and its amazing how many people were actually in this audience. The set design looks like something from TBN.

This is entertainment. I have no idea where this comes from but I first found it on VH1. It is difficult to tell if its a joke or if its for real. Its hard to care about this more than 30 seconds.



Reverend X swears, curses and calls it the way it is. The camera juts around all funky like and the accusations zip around like hungry sharks. He will offend anyone who gets in his path. Its worth a look.... because this entire thing is just so incredibly odd. Its hyptnotic.

WHOS DAMNED?

Robert Tilton.. the farting Preacher..... THE DAMNED.. the rock band of the age, PUBLIC IMAGE LTD with John Lydon.. aka Johnny Rotten.... its all fodder for the asking really.

I found a bunch of clips and sort of mashed them all up around eachother and let them all go. Its entertaining and interesting. Not one of them is really better than the other. They are all sort of intriguing in their own way.
