THE CHARLATANS UK - HAPPEN TO DIE

Classic live Charlatans - great hammond from late great Rob Collins (
more)

Try as I might I could not locate the lyrics for this song. This is the first time I heard that this song was about their keyboardest Rob Collins who died in some horrible accident.

The other thing which I found somewhat interesting is that singer Tim Burgess looks like the retard, (Leo DeCaprio) in, "Whats Eating Gilbert Grape?" He has the ability to somewhat defy age in his early clips.

The other thing about the Charlatans which is also interesting is that they're always backed up with a great beat. This incredible sound is matched up with incredibly dark lyrics at times. There are moments of great uplift and the overall effect is overpowering.

Even at their worst, they are worth looking at.

THE CHARLATANS - TELLING STORIES... LIVE

the CHARLATANS UK - TELLING STORIES

This is one of the best songs from the imported album of the same title. There are other tracks on this cd worth hearing, "How Could You Leave Us?" and "North Country Boy" .... Great stuff. Its one of my favorites but it has been hard to come by lately. Thank goodness for Amazon.com.

THE CHARLATANS UK - DONT WANT TO SEE THE SIGHTS

IS THIS THE VIDEO THAT KILLED METAL?

MTV took a sharp left handed turn when this band came out. The Charlatans UK signaled the end for a somewhat promising format. Shortly after the Charlatans UK came out Warrants "Cherry Pie" video vanished in thin air. The Inspiral Carpets came out with their Madchester pop sound. Then the big heavy hammer came out with Nirvana and everything changed. Pretty much forever. Soon after Cobain and Co. did their little thing on MTV the entire station swtiched over to a hip hop rap format.

This video here is interesting for a number of reasons. It isn't really that fantastic musically or visually. And Tim Burgess looks really young here... just a kid really. Yet this band was enough to get the ball rolling.

The one thing you can say about a lot of these UK bands despite their age is that they could realy articulate well. They could do that vocally, musically and lyrically. I mean REALLY WELL.

I just came out of a show in Detroit where the 40 year old singer bellowed, "Im Pissed Off Again".... and that pretty much is the ENTIRE SONG. Its just repeated about.....50 times in two and a half minutes.

So this song, and this video DOES have some merit.

THE CHARLATANS - Live... From A Phone Near You !

WHAT A GREAT SONG THIS IS...............

Break out the Doc Martens and Champange.... Incredible.

The video came to us by someone with a video feature on their cell phone. Amazing that this song is intact and in good quality all around despite the crappy footage.

"Just When You Thinkin It's Over" is one of the glimmering gems on the Charlatans UK release. Its brilliant. Compared to a few other songs on this cd its one of the more memorable ones.

I cannot tell when this show was but for the last few years their light show has remained consistently good so who knows....

the charltans uk - just looking -- live on the 120 Minutes Show

FROM THE GREATEST BAND ON THE PLANET

It's a bit difficult to talk humbly when I mention these guys in any writen form. This is a 12 year old clip and its just incredible.

A strange and strong contrast compared to what is selling in todays market. I just got through watching another boring episode of Amercan... Entertainment Tonight.... and besides boring me half stupid this show ignores anything really interesting or intriguing in the world of entertainment. I guess they learned long ago to just give up and leave it to me.

I know whats interesting -- and these guys are interesting.

THE CHARLATANS UK - TELLING STORIES

TELLING STORIES

"This album and everything on it is worth it.... its worth pursuing, its worth owning and its worth living. Every track on it pulses with its own eclectic beat -- existing in a time of its own.... It rises above so many other releases they've made -- mostly because it remains relevant"

THE CHARLTANS UK - MADCHESTER

SPROSTON GREEN (sigh)

its stood the test of time and is still fantastic. The split second shot of singer Tim Burgess looking all bummed out and contemplative is identical to Andy Partridge of XTC on the Skylarking inner sleave as if to say..... "When will my genius be discovered or realized?"..... or to put it another way... the nervous cover shot of the Smiths release, "THE WORLD WON'T LISTEN".

Either way, a substantial effort all around.

Its hard to be super critical of this band when every day people contribute so little. These guys have given their fans a lot of "meat" over the years. Every once in a while this band will crank out some drizzley forgettable garble but not very often. Their normal speed of operendi is KICKED UP ROCK OVERDRIVE.....

This video is early from what I can tell. It could be their first introduction to the US. The haircuts are kind of a give away. I never knew what the singer looked like and was somewhat stunned to find out he was very elfish in appearance. Then I was further stunned to find out that he was so depressing. They had something to say about their glum view on life - they didn't hide from anything and what they delivered was very real.

This is from the album, Some Friendly.... and its still very good. I got the tracks memorized.
