JOHN BELUSHI - WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS
"JERKING THE RUG UNDER THE FEET OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC"
Watching Belushi trample the stage with these antics is a lot like watching vandalism in full force. Rob Reiner, the Meathead, did his best to warm up the crowd. Belushi steps in and does some wild take on Joe Cocker. Whats interesting about this is that this song was performed by Cocker in the WoodStock film.
The first few episodes of Saturday Night Live came off like it lacked a format. Belushi's first appearances were centered around a bee sketch. There was not a whole lot of comedy work being done. The second show was hogged up by Simon and Garfunkel. As a kid I kept hoping that there was a two song limit. These guys literally HOGGED UP THE ENTIRE EPISODE. There was a lot of drug and 60's references.
Sometimes the films were okay. Most times they were pretty terrible. Belushi called Simon a "musical wimp" according to the backstage history.
So when the writers finally turned the stage over to Belushi he was ready. What happened next stunned audience members. They were too overwhelmed to clap or cheer. This got my attention as a kid and I latched onto him as he was a stand out character.

UNFROZEN CAVEMAN LAWYER - COMEDY BUILT FOR SPEED
This clip was made imortal by Phil Hartman. The ending of this features a political ending which is nice. I liked the original clip where he threatens to sue an entire airline.

VANILLA ICE - WORD TO YOUR MOTHER
This guy had his own language. It didn't translate well over the years and most of it was lost. But this guy was serious.
Then he got weird. Not that he needed help in that area. But his managers dangled him out of a balcony upside down and chased him out of Los Angeles. He made a really rank film called, "Cool as Ice" which I do recommend renting,... not owning... but renting just out of pure curiosity. There are some funny parts in there.. although it wasn't meant to be a comedy.
Vanilla Ice -- what exactly was he?
To give him credit... he could dance. He had an audience. But he was an oddball. After he got his life threatened he came back. This new reincarnation was based on a ganja smoking rasta guy.... he threw a record party where no press people showed up. He sat in a corner toking his brains out.
There was another album attempt after that too I believe.

The Replacements - KISS ME ON THE BUS - SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
When the Replacements showed up on Saturday Night Live they were snubbed by the cast.... which is pretty funny since it was 1985. The SNL show in general was not in such a great shape and being offbeat was what made it popular in the first place. But with all those corporate dollars floating in from Coke, Bud, Doritos and McDonalds..... its okay. In my opinion SNL was becoming a product. OR becoming everything that they originally hated.
IT was not Belushi's show anymore.
Still to be fair... the Replacements could have dressed up a bit. Singer Paul Westerberg looks pretty raggedy. The overalls are funny and this once again shows you that New York City IS NOT ANN ARBOR. The Replacements were making a killing in college towns and becoming a household name in every record collection.
The rest of the SNL cast went off to do some pretty forgettable projects. Dana Carvey failed to wow the world with his... "Man of Disguise" motion picture. Jon Levitz is still hawking a product.. most recently, Subway sandwiches.
