THE ARCTIC MONKEYS - LOVE MACHINE LIVE
"getting on with the mad sound......."
This is great to see. Its nice to plug into music on your own terms. I haven't listened to my local stations in MONTHS... and I know if I do I can expect to hear the same songs they've been hauling around for the past twenty years......
The Detroit market seems to push... the band LIVE.. I know, its stupid, but I am in Detroit. This is serious. Let me continue.... They also like to push STONE TEMPLE PILOTS for some very weird reason and a lot of Eddie Veddar rip offs. 89.X for the most part does a terrible job and yes I know they are out of Canada but they have a tremendous influence over... what used to be a great metropolis? (lol) Detroit Michigan.
SO when I find a band like the Arctic Monkeys doing a great new sound of course I am going to latch onto it WITH A SERIOUS FEVER. The news is that this song is a remake of Girls Alouds version. Its still good to listen to and a bit unexpected. The pacing of this video is a bit frenetic but its matching the rythym of the song. Yes its hard on the eyes but carrying on quite well by inventing another visual dialect for the eyes to contend with.
Remember that in the early days everyone complained about the "rapid fire machine gun editing of MTV". This takes that energy and offers up a new version of that. The circling camera movements and the choppy editing really sellls this song. AND ITS GREAT.

THE ARCTIC MONKEYS - "THAT MAN JUST YAWNED!"
"THAT MAN JUST YAWNED!!"
First up -- we got Matt Dillon introducing the band on Saturday Night Live. I can't believe this guy is still around.... doing... much of anything... seriously. But anways.... ITs America, and we have an equal opportunity system in entertainment. We hawk them around back and forth to endorse products and crappy movies that in turn endorse more crappy products. There is NO SAVING GRACE when it comes to this shit... Its endless. Thats why I do not understand the snobbery that comes up in entertainment... whether you like Ellen, Oprah, WWF, or Nancy Grace.. These are all terrible crappy products...... SNL is a commercial to hawk Coke and Mc Donalds.
Bands have been snubbed on SNL countless times because the audience does not "GET IT". This happened to the B-52's, The Replacements and now..... THE ARCTIC MONKEYS.
I think its worth mentioning that the singer points out to the audience that someone in the audience yawned. Funny shit. They were obviously a bit turned off with America too. This is not an American song in the first place. Its a FRIGGEN LOCAL SONG about the Arctic Monkeys living environment in the streets where they come from. Its not a song about T & A, big trucks and or whiney Eddie Veddar garbage that our American radio system is used to.
This is different -- its unique. SO CONSEQUENTLY it will be jeered. WHO NEEDS SEX when you got this kind of sound. This stuff is powerful. These guys are powerful. I know these guys don't give a toss either way because they are big shots where they hail from.
Americans need a few key ingredients to stay "alive". Music isn't one of them. We even have to have our "entertainment scene" manufactured to us weekly and served on a cold frozen plate along with the other crappy pre-fab pre-packaged stuff one finds in the frozen aisle. We are a country of consuming filters who are homogenized and content, (or malcontent) with the unsavory choices that are put out in front of them. Pigs are the same way really. They just accept what they get. "Dancing With the Stars", and of course "American Idol" come to mind.
I have nothing against Kelly Clarkston as a person. But we strip out originality and rebellion for a pop MILF out of convenience. You know. there are OTHER things you can do with your money when it comes to music. There are other outlets besides Target, Walmart and Costco.
sad sad times. The Arctic Monkeys are brilliant. Honestly.
Too brilliant to be schlagging across the stage for mind numbingly boring Americans.
It hardly matters if you get snubbed on SNL by castmembers and audience alike. That is such a worthless way to measure true talent. SNL should have died 20 years ago.

THE ARCTIC MONKEYS - WHERE 'AVE YOU BEEN?
"I'm Damn Glad They've Arrived When They DID !!"
The perfect anectdote to rehab.
I love these rascals. They are coming to America too which makes me love them even more. They got real balls.
They care enough to come to Detroit to show the rest of us just how music is done. Even though I can't help but feel a bit of real closeness to this and the White Stripes. I still like them.
This particular romp has little to do with their typical sound... which is a sound I particulary like.... since it doesn't sound like anything else out there, (check the strange and uneven measures and intros and mini intros to their main song... "A Certain Romance" for example). These guys have a bit of Quadrophenic sensibility that only owning a SUV could cure.

Its a damn shame we got nothing like them on this side of the pond.
BUT THEY ARE COMING TO DETROIT, as I've said so multi cheers to that !

ARCTIC MONKEYS - HEH
FROM THE GONZO TOUR IN 2005
I must admit when I first heard of these guys in the NME I didn't have much hope. The pictures of the band looked like cheeky high school pics. But yet they were grabbing a lot of headlines with the Babyshambles. IN FACT, I accidently thought that, "Certain Romance" was actually a Babyshambles tune. WRONG.
This is excitement on another level. This is the Arctic Monkeys.... WHOOPS. I made that error after I listened to a handful of their tracks and this was the only one that didn't quite fit in. Hey, it can happen to anyone... right?
This song - and video - have a multi-layered feel for different styles of music. It goes from unbelievably hard, to ska, to Beatles, to an all out thrashy throw down. Its got a blend of Quadrophenic overtones to this entire thing that makes it quite irristible to me.
The lyrics slay me......
"....over theres broken bones, but theres only music so that theres new ring tones....."
"...theres boys in bands, and kids who like to scrap with pool cues in their hands...."
Man... this is brutal stuff but its NEEDED.
We get layered styles of music too in American bands. They start out boring, with two chords, mumble some depressing lyrics, then it gets hard, then it goes back to the quiet part, and the craps out like a diseased fart.
I seriously stopped remembering the names of a lot of todays, "TOP TALENT" in American rock radio. I'll only offer the effort of remembering them if they are in the least bit intersting like the Arctic Monkeys.
