Ah... Fred Rogers, (The Slender Champ) vs Julia Child. This is premium entertainment. This is done with some accuracy. There are some great supporting characters. Check out Mister McFeely.. Speedy Delivery mail man... and the likeness is so close its almost unbareable.

The rooting King Friday is beyond hilarious. I like when he picks up the puppet and clubs her over the head with it. Its genius.

"Is This What Real Rock Video Should Look Like... EH??"

Its hard not to like this clip. I know very little about this band other than it appeared on SCTV in the early 80's. The video is typical of the kind of stuff that came out during this time. The solid white background was a favorite in the industry at the time. The videos in that period didn't rely on high speed film stocks and color toned sets and digital imagery, (on an elevated CGI level).

It was fun, poppy and quirky -- and you can see a bit of XTC, and ABC in there visually. But what makes this video fun enough to watch is that you are curious to see what its all about. There is a penguin in there, there is country line dancing in there, and if you look closely it looks like a Loreal hair commercial in some parts. Its amusing. Not amazing, but... amusing. And for its entertainment value you need to see it again. The damn thing keeps you curious and glued to the screen. When its over you want to watch the whole thing again.

Part of you thinks... "What was that? What did I just see?"

Thats the beauty of this clip. They are a confident band and display real courage for cranking out something that will most likely get laughed at or even ignored. It takes guts to be this brave and daring.

And that makes this all the more likeable.

POP CULTURE CONFESSION

Now that I'm far from campus and the Nirvana years I can speak my mind. When I first saw Kurt Kobain I had no idea what sex he was. I saw the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video and was totally confused. I really thought it was a joke band.

Worse.... Kobain reminded of Hollywood lunatic Jackie Rogers Junior, (played by Martin Short on SCTV).

Its not entirely out of line. I once confused the lead singer of Sugar Smack to be an ugly woman. This quasi-Led Zeppelin band featured a long haired girly man in skin tight pink leather pants. It turned out to be a really gangly guy with bright pink hair. He was leaping around so fast on stage that I couldn't tell what he was.... a male or a female. Now before I get off the track......

Jackie Rogers Junior is the worlds first albino superstar. This live track from a video tape release, "Martin Short Goes to Hollywood" is a bit silly but no sillier than some of the campy Vegas/Hollywood stars we've endured over the years.

This is a parody of the classic Rat Pack film, "Oceans Eleven". This was shown on the comedy show SCTV as the "Movie of the Week". It stars all the Vegas style characters from the skit, "The Sammy Maudlin Show" including Sammy Maudlin, William B, Bobby Biman and his kid brother Skip Bitman.

Its a bit over the top - sort of like the original staring Frank Sinatra. I rented the original "Oceans Eleven" a few years ago and actually prefer this parody a lot more.

There are four parts to this. The last part of part 4 ends abrubtly but there is enough comedy in here to keep you going.

I would see this in a theater - I don't know why Martin Short hasn't already done this. The last Austin Powers movie wasn't that great. The only other character I would love to see in the theater in his own movie would have been Andy Kaufman's Tony Clifton character, (there actually was a Tony Clifton screenplay being passed around in the early 80's).

Jackie Rogers Jr was the first albino Vegas star, He did all the Elvis tunes and wore lots of rhinestones and beads. His stories are great. Now his father, Jackie Rogers Sr. was mauled to death by live cougars. The tranquilized cougar was suddenly awakened by a plate of java mocha coffee beans..... I told you this guy was crazy.
This was reinacted on SCTV once in a flashback clip for his book, "Love + Genius = Jackie".

I also like the joke about the Beta machines.

Someone in Hollywood should really consider making this character into a movie. Its hysterical.

I remember seeing this when it first came out -- it was pretty hilarious. The audience in this clip pretty much captures the publics opinion on this type of music when it first came out.

The line that kills me that i always remembered was, "I CANT AFFORD ME DOPE"

but now that I see this again, the killer line is,
"I feel sorry for Lady Di, .... having a mother in law like that !!!"

and that is how the song ends.... real abrupt.
There were bands back then in the late 70's that scared the crap out of me. I remember picking up album titles and being too afraid to buy them. The Plasmatics scared me for some reason. The look of the album in general was frightening. That was true added to the fact that radio stations steered clear of bands like that. Most radio stations played Andy Gibb records.

That seems laughable now but this was during the age of Solid Gold. Then later when I became an all out hooligan I couldnt find a band violent or crazy enough to satisfy me. I played everything i could get my greedy mits on.

This is one of SCTV's shining moments. This ran on the segment, "Mels Rockpile" which was a Solid Gold type show led by rockin Mel SLurrup.... (Eugene Levy).
