THE WHO - SISTER DISCO
KEITH MOON WILL NOT BE SEEN TONIGHT.....
This song has been dropped from the later WHO sets - which is a shame. This is actually a very good song. This was taken during the first Farewell Tour. The replacement drummer is Kenny Jones. Keith Moon, the former drummer, had a date with destiny after taking an overdose of pills and booze.
This punchy type performance is brilliant stuff. It came off terrible when it was released later as WHOS LAST, (Yes I bought it on tape!) as the sound levels were very muddy. As with all their performances you have to take the good with the bad and be lucky you got anything at all. I have heard some of the legendary 1976 performances on CD snippets and off DVD's floating around and those are much better if you can find them.
The latest WHO releases showcase a very different type of band. This was how I remembered them as a performing band -- loud, edgy and animated.

This is an another clip of a previous post on THE TRUTH, (Dennis Greives from Nine Below Zero). In the previous post it came with a somewhat unwanted extra of X singing BURNING HOUSE OF LOVE which I didn't particulary like.
I like the IRS tag in the beginning of the song. Here is what is interesting about this clip. Sure on one hand it is a total WHO rip off because its thrashy power chords with crashing drum rolls. But it works. THE TRUTH released this in 1985 and it is literally out of print.
I think its the most brilliant thing they ever did. The other albums they put out weren't as gripping as this. I also liked Grievsies later releases with Nine Below Zero but he really takes the R and B thing to a sleeping lull. Sometimes its amazing and sometimes its very subtle.
I liked the Townsend jump in the beginning. Its almost as if the UK kids had to come over here and show us how to do rock music. This really stuck in my head for years. The album - should you find it - is extremely expensive now and rare. I remember it being absolutely amazing in just about every way.
You really needed an album label like IRS back in the day. There was a lot of drivel going around with the devil and 666 stuff in the high schools. I was bored with it. I wanted something exciting. The edits are all equal length here for the most part. Its got a tempo to it.
Funny how you start to notice those sort of things when you actually do editing. Back in the 80's a lot of this stuff was done by hand before digital desktop editing....
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The only computers we had in 85' were those crappy Macs that were the size of a bowling ball.
The opening is from Back Porch Video. The Smartest kids in my neighborhood. I grew up in the same town as they did and used to watch this show growing up in Ann Arbor. They were the only kids that understood what I wanted to see and what mattered most. It wasn't rap music which at the time was not widely accepted as being a serious musical form. The things that captured my attention was bands like these.

THE WHO - MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL - (YIKES)
THE WHO - LIVE - MY GENERATION
"This is where it all .... ends" blurts Pete Townsend and all hell breaks loose. That is an understatement. This seemingly trite song turns into complete unabashed bedlam. I honestly believe that after all these years this is how the song should look and sound whenever its performed.
Drummer Keith Moon is unrelenting when this song takes off and doesn't quit. I am somewhat disappointed with this clip because I've seen it before from the film, "The Kids Are Alright". I was never able to get any confirmation on what is actually happening on the film due to the lighting. Moon hits the drum and looks up as if he is trying to catch a drumstick in mid-flight. I have seen him look up several times on different clips but have no idea if he actually does this at all. He pretends to catch something and continue on pounding and bashing the hell out of his drum kit. Maybe he really does catch it and then again, maybe he is just play acting.
He drums so fast anyways that its really difficult to tell.
I wished there was a complete clip of the chaos in the middle of the song -- I can do without all the flashbacks. The rest of this song is quite dizzying. The clip picks back up at the end when Moon smashes up his drums briefly as the explosions go off. That part looks a bit sloppy and not as great as it could have been but still its a triumphant ending. There isn't much to break up after Townsend and Daltrey stumble off the stage.
They weren't trying to be cute in this performance. There is real blood and venom going on in the delivery of this song.

THE WHO - LIVE ON THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS SHOW
What a disaster. I mean its a great show but its a miracle anyone didn't get seriously dismembered or killed! Keith Moon put a couple of kegs of dynamite into his bass drum.... literally. When it went off Pete Townshend lost part of his hearing and his arm was pelted with tiny shards of
cymbol. Depending on who you talk to its still lodged
into the flesh of his arm. John Entwistle, the bassist, seems bored while all of this is going on or maybe he's just used to it.
Roger Daltrey is doing his best to look like either Florence Henderson or Mrs. Reed Richards, (The Invisible Girl) from the Fantastic Four comics. That hair is unmistakebly from a 60's astronaut housewife who holds Tupperware parties and serves powdered Tang. Its odd, its kooky..... its.... THE WHO.
This was as close to a Hannah Barbara cartoon as I could get. Besides looking totally goofy and gangly they were all sexually frustrated. As a kid I clung to them for dear life because they became heros of mine. I could somehow relate to them -- that is -- when I could figure out what they were ranting about.
The other song they did on the Smothers Brothers show was, "I Can See For Miles". This was their first television appearance in America. From here they went on to play the Filmore and do a mini tour. These shows were little more than 2 1/2 minutes of about 5 songs and they would smash up their gear and leap off the stage.
This is the opening scene for the newly restored dvd release, "THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT". That movie features all the television spots, videos and some live performances. They left out all the tracks from, "Quadrophenia" which is a shame because that is their most prolific project.

QUADROPHENIA - THE MOTION PICTURE
THE VOICE OF AN ANGRY GENERATION
1979 was an odd time. Punk Rock had fizzled and from its ashes came the rebirth of SKA. American bands were translating the Punk message to more radio friendly New Wave. New York was taking the punk message and splintering off the No Wave sound. MTV was about to bring some of that energy into every living room in the country.
The WHO released their epic rock motion picture. "QUADROPHENIA". This movie showcased a slice of time in the UK centered around the early 60's. It was a violent time of social and musical change of Mods vs Rockers through the eyes of a young schizophrenic named Jimmy Cooper. The music isn't what you think it might be. Its American doo wop and the Quadrophenia soundtrack is chopped up and inserted into the film somewhat unevenly. The dialect is distinctly tied to the neighborhood of Sheppards Bush so it is somewhat hard to distinguish at times. All in all this film is highly entertaining.
The album was re-introduced to American audiences with a tour. Keith Moon had already OD'd and was replaced by Kenny Jones. This tour became infamous for its stampede where some kids in the audience were trampled to death as fans rushed the stage. This led to some controversy over the "Festival Seating" arrangements in big arena concerts. The film promotion was shown to the audiences and its reception was luke warm. This was to become a great cult film in later years and a college campus favorite.
Quadrophenia had the same problem when the studio album was released in America. The 1973 tour was often interupted with Roger Daltrey having to explain the meaning and significance of the songs. But the sound system was poor and people in the audience had to strain their ears to hear what he was saying. In certain aspects this tour was a flop. But musically it was a brilliant acheivement.
Director Frank Roddam added a real urban direction to the film. Guitarist Pete Townshend originally wanted the characters to sing their own parts as in the film, "Tommy". I would have liked to have seen that version as well. It would have been strange but I think it also may have taken the severity out of the premise.
Keith Moon actually brought one of his bodyguards with him to the set. He was drunk and wanted to direct the film with Roddam as a team. He died shortly after this encounter. I was glad that this film only had the direction of one main artist. Its a strong peice that holds up quite well especially when you compare it next to what passes for entertainment today.
