THE SEX PISTOLS - FROM BAD TO WORSE

"....AH YES.. NOW I GET IT... OH WOW.. IS THAT WHAT THIS SONG IS ALL ABOUT?"

This was written by Sid Vicious -- supposedly. I saw the lyrics scribbed on some notebook paper. The controversey continues if he was this gentle articulate person capable of broadening political thought -- or a cartoon version of the Hulk. Maybe he was a little of both but this song does border on the verge of being brilliant.

This performance was taken in San Francisco at the Winterland Ballroom. Johnny Rotten had the flu when they shot this concert which is hard to believe that he could carry on. He also had to sleep on the bus with Sid in the cold. Malcom, Paul Cook and Steve Jones got to sleep in a hotel and fly around in a jet. This brought on the end of the band as Rotten grew more jealous and furious. Eventually he was rumored to have been fired from the group.....

I was surprised to see this entire concert existed on bootleg video. Prior to its release the word on the street was that this entire show never happend. Rotten supposedly only sang one song and then stormed off. This was not the case at all. In fact, he was supposed to have said, "Did you ever get the feeling you were being CHEATED?" and then stammering off..... but this never occured.... at least in that way.

Hell did break loose however when the band abruptly ended. There was a european leg for this tour too supposedly in Holland that was never fulfilled. This entire thing lost its edge in America. Nobody really followed UK politics to the extent of the Cambridge Rapist. But it made for great drama. I liked the Tshirts by Vivianne Westwood from the SEX shop. It was bastardized Warhol taken to the max. Some of these shirts were never printed in books. When I saw them I was somewhat shocked and I thought I had seen everything. They were pretty vile. They went over the limit for what I thought was shocking.... seriously. The reprints you get in America are very wimpy and watered down. They only tell half of the story.

This song told about what a horrible thing it is to present the war torn streets of europe as a travel destination. It does it in a roundabout way in under three minutes. In a lot of ways I respect what they tried to do here. This song was never topped in its grotesqueness as they fizzled out quick after it was released. The version i liked better was when Rotten was kicked out. They fronted RONNIE BIGGS.. aka. THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY. I liked that version better because it was incredibly silly and ridiculous as this 56 year old geezer accepted punk rock and this old German Kraut Nazi yelled SCHNELL through the end of the song.....

Sid was definately a looming figure in that scene but I believe he was far from brilliant. I prefered Sue Catwoman and Linda Ashby instead. I think they were phenomenal to look at and were completely original characters.

SID VICIOUS - MORE ALIVE THAN DEAD IN NEW YORK CITY

"TELECAST OF THE DEAD"

I have no idea who the girl on the right is.... she is known only as Cynthia..... But Sid, Nancy and Stiv Bators are all deceased.

This was created within stumbling distance from the Chelsea Hotel within weeks of Nancy's horrific murder on 9/18/1978. This was before terrorism hit state side and when the real enemy of the streets was cocaine cowboys and heroin junkies........

Makes you kinda miss the good ol days.

There is a funny comparison to THE SEX PISTOLS sounding like THE WHO... which is hysterical. This guy who calls in is a typical nosey new york jerk.... hes babbling onward about political statements...... The Who was a political band? lol..... OKAY......

I remember the WHO quite fondly since i used to really relate to them. The only thing about THE WHO being political may stem over who rules the streets at night .... ala mods and rockers. Aside from songs about masturbation and violence there weren't a whole lot of international politics going on there......

Politics wouldn't really hit the front page until the Clash.. and the Pistols too ... well, to an extent. It is somewhat difficult to watch this video because I find Nancy nausiating. Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders said that she was really that bad in real life. Punks actually nicknamed her Nausiating Nancy. She claims she is a music manager and is alligned with the big players like Virgin and Warner Brothers which is pretty funny......

The major labels knew the name SEX PISTOLS.... but they did not know the players. In fact when the band broke up nobody knew who Johnny Rotten was. ROtten called up asking for money and the record company hung up on him.

These outrageous claims started to take life a good 11 years after the band broke up. The Pistols took on a much more larger prominence in America due to many licensing deals. Many T-shirt companies and record re-issues pumped new blood into the franchise. Otherwise when you look at what happend during the ANARCHY tour you will find that very few Americans even raised their eyebrows to the entire thing.

I was able to get inside the Chelsea Hotel out of morbid curiosity. I got into the lobby and found that it was very small. I looked down the hallway where Sid and Nancy lived in room 100... or 101 etc. The bellman asked. CAN I HELP YOU? and I said.. hmmmmmm yeah.. i just popped in to take a better look at that BOtello over there... (there was a large Botello painting on the wall). He cheered up a bit. The Chelsea will toss you out if they think you are a gawker and looking for the Sid and Nancy room. That room is supposedly haunted and it is sealed up now.

On the outside of the Hotel is a plaque where all these famous people stayed. Malcom... or Sid.. painted the name SID over it for an album cover shot. It was pink lead paint. You can still see traces of the letters on it and where the hotel had it sandblasted off. I think Malcom got someone to vandalize that sign. I think Malcom was too cowardly to do it himself and I think Sid was too much of a junkie to care one way or the other........

THE SEX PISTOLS - REAL RADIO STATION INTERVIEW

REAL CONVERSATIONS - Sat. January 14th.

Yes these guys were out of their heads half of the time but when they had something to say - they'd say it. This interview was taken from "Some Products Carri On... ". Its been a while since I heard it but its pretty straight forward. The Pistols shoot their mouths off every chance they get. And its usually quite interesting when the verbage pours out.....

This CD is worth getting if you can find it. Sid and Johnny Rotten were pretty interesting all around. This entire CD is packed with radio spots, interviews, and snippets of advertisements for, "The Great Rock and Roll Swindle" movie... which i consider one of the most important documents from that time period. You can get a glimpse at the complete lunacy of the whole thing.

The demos they talk about in this clip are somewhat dubious. I am not aware of any song they created that slams God personally. I have no idea what they are referring to. There was some deliberate pot shots taken to the deep south. They also take some broad swings at New York City with the song, "New York" which is funny. Punk started in NYC -- that is if you ask one of the aging depressed violent angry angst ridden ex-junkies. There is some dispute on where punk really started. The NY punks didn't really see themselves as punk. In the 1970's it was just considered the rock music scene.

The real Punk Rock scene started up in London in 1976. That means - the ripped up t-shirts, spikey hair - and the overall cartoonish look of the entire thing. That certainly didn't come off from the streets of Manhatten in the Village. I looked at the New York scene as a homeade sound with a lot of drug freak culture that was left over from the 60's -- aimless, sloppy and somewhat revved up while incoherant. The full blown three chord teenage punk bands came from the dirty streets of London.

Sid Vicious has some pretty profound statements in this interview. His views on racism always sort of stuck with me for years. His views on people just seeing themselves as people and not being classified as this or that.... rings true even today in this horrible Post-911 world. These guys were ahead of their time for what they were about.

This is a great time piece. Radio of modern times doesn't come close to this type of insightful brutal honesty. You would never hear an interview of its type on the air today.

THE SEX PISTOLS - LIVE IN SWEDEN - 1977

THE SPOTS - SEX PISTOLS ON TOUR

The Anarchy in the UK tour was a flop.... it had THE DAMNED, JOHNNY THUNDERS, THE CLASH and most of the dates were cancelled. Bad press and attacks by local government created a maelstrom of confusion. The press worked against them in a lot of ways as the controversey grew.

Sid Vicious beat up journalist Nick Kent with a chain. Vicious also landed in jail after accidently blinding a girl in one eye at a punk gig after throwing a beer mug. Band manager Malcom McLaren had a hard time booking them anywhere because he feared getting arrested. Strategicially working out of his Picadilly Square office, Glitterbest, he wormed his way through the grimey streets of London searching out future gigs. Screen on the Green would no longer accept them and either would the 100 Club...... So they bellied up in strip joints, prisons and "fashionable art parties.... any sh**^% that didn't reek of rock and roll".

When that happened the band played secret shows as THE SPOTS, (Sex Pistols On Tour)... Malcom got the gigs after Steve Jones threatened Malcom... maybe it was Johnny Rotten... they threatened to walk out on the band. In 1977 the band popped up in Sweden of all places. These were high energy gigs although you couldn't really tell from this footage because the quality of it is very poor. There was no real "punk show" aesthetic to compare anything with back in 1977. But the kids were ecstatic to see the Pistols on stage.

The ceiling was very low in this club. This could have been a very small club but thanks to the lighting you can't really tell how big this venue was. My guess is that it was probably very small... capable of maybe only holding 300 people.... if that. Everything is blown out of proportion in the history books. Authors make every venue out to be a mini Madison Square Garden..... My guess is that these rooms were very small.

Steve Jones said these were the greatest gigs the bands played. The energy was very high.

THE SEX PISTOLS - PERFECTING THE SWINDLE

"ALAS.. IT WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE
But for what it was -- I considered the whole damn thing pretty fantastic."

You're going to laugh but Ten Pole Tudor was my favorite singer in the Sex Pistols. I know he only sang on the title track and some of the demos and only played with them.... twice? But still he was my favorite. I liked the line up... Sid Vicious, Steve Jones, Ten Pole Tudor and Paul Cook ... that was a good one....

Still, better yet I liked Cook and Jones with the Nazi singer and the Ronnie Biggs,.. the Great Train Robber..... Thats some good entertainment kids......

I felt somewhat ripped off that these strange ensembles couldnt have recorded full albums and went on tour. By this time the joke was completely over and there was no chance for a tour after that San Francisco gig. By 1978, the joke was over.

Ten Pole Tudor was crazier looking than Sid Vicious which was pretty hard to do at the time. He was scary. I had listened to the soundtrack hundreds of time but to see this all unfold visually for the first time was completely explosive. I had no idea this is how they really looked. Seriously, since the Pistols there hasn't been another group of young ruffians with much shock appeal. We're not talking heavy make up or big theatrics. They just looked like malnourished schizophrenic psychopaths.

Here's the Interview:
Was the audition as it was portrayed in the film?
Pretty much. The Sex Pistols weren't there on the initial day. They whittled it down to the final four or something, to do it the next day with the Pistols. The Pistols were miming, with each of us doing (singing) a version of the Rock 'n' Roll Swindle track, and they spliced it up. The audition is as seen in the film, but all cut together.

I was intrigued as to when the lead vocals were recorded. Were they recorded the day before?
They were recorded live over the backing track that was already recorded. When we turned up, they gave us all a cassette to listen to a recording of the song, Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, with just Steve singing it. We had to learn it, we all had a sheet with the words on it. They gave us an hour or two to swot up on it, before we actually did it on stage.

Who auditioned you the day before? Julien Temple?
Yeah. We had to do that. This was the first day, the opening gambit. I'd been at drama school and the audition was in a theatre, therefore I went in through the stage door. All the other lads piled in the front and they were sitting around in the stalls waiting their turn. A man with a clipboard was saying "What's your name, who's next?" So I went in at the stage door and found my way to the stage and made a massive entrance! If you're on stage you've got the attention of the entire theatre.
===============================
It would be the last time Vicious, Cook and Jones would ever see eachother again. Sid left for America right after this was shot. When he came to New York City with Nancy Spungeon the two of them spiraled down lifes ladder on a heroin binge that ended up finishing them both.

On a far lighter note, "The Swindle" takes a big part of what made the punk movement fun in the first place. The opening shots of Picadilly Square were just weeks after the mayhem settled down. I like it because its got kind of a documentary - (you were there....) kinda feeling to it. Even if it was manufactured culture its got an Andy Kaufman approach to it. The joke was on the record companies and the stuck up crowd.

This film stands up even today as a monumental achievement. Especially for the burst of creativity for what it created years after, (not including the 90's of course).

SID VICIOUS - THE GREAT ROCK AND ROLL SWINDLE

THE GREAT ROCK AND ROLL SWINDLE

The tragic thing about the movie, "The Great Rock And Roll Swindle" is that you can only do it once....... What a catastrophe this project was.... If you never read any books on Malcom McLaren and the punk movement you should pick up, "Londons Dreaming" by Greil Marcus.

Even if you've never read anything on punk music then you can always watch, "The Filth and the Fury". This pretty much explains what the big news was all about.

Malcom McLaren and his lawyers buzzed through the offices of the record companies and held them responsible for signing up his act. There was advance money of course. But where he really cashed in was by keeping all the likenesses of the group and capitalizing off of license fees.

Still - for as influential as the Pistols were they really didn't have any books, movies or videos in America until the mid-80's. This was long after the fire was out. Sid Vicious was already dead, the sounds changed and that piece of history was in the past.

Vicious stands out of that movement because he was a character of himself. He was a symbol for the manufactured Pistols. So making a toy of him becomes somewhat normal.

This scene in the "Great Rock and Roll Swindle", (just re-released finally after 20 years) is in the close of the film. It was shot in France at the Olympia (home of Eddie Barclay a famous French entertainer personality). The woman in the front row is Ann Beverly, ("I Can't Believe Thats My Sid Up There"). She died shortly after this was shot of a heroin overdose. But not before giving Sid, (her own son) a lethal dose of heroin causing him to OD as well.

Adam and the ANTS - DELIVER INDEED

Yes I like my videos goofy AT TIMES !!! I will risk at offending all the women out there when I say I liked Adam Ant better in his bone vests and makeup. I liked all the inventions thrown on him by Malcom McLaren, (creator of the Sex Pistols). Why? BECAUSE ITS FUN.

If you like your pop music mushy, romantic and serious then go dig up some tracks by Jack Wagner, (in 1985 I found 40 unwrapped, unopened wagner albums sitting in a record store) tsk tsk.

STAND AND DELIVER I SAID !!!.. Well, this video certainly does just that. It literally jumps off the screen and transports you into a land of fun, terror, hilariarty and sheer lunacy.

*** A note to the glum purists out there..... I like Adam and the Ants... yes yes.. But I also liked Adam Ant. Drummer Marco Pironi followed Adam throughout his entire career, well... most of it. And the purists say the band really ended when Adam and the Ants became... Adam Ant... well.. stop arguing you bunch of sad sacks and just enjoy the eclectic music.
