HOUSE OF LOVE - DESTROY THE HEART
Yes, I admit -- I do hear a bit of Echo and the Bunnymen in here -- but the middle of this song gets sort of lost. I lose the narrative when I hear the song. When you watch the video it does tend to go forward in a very clear cut singular direction. But then again -- so does the camera so the two of them sort of coincide and allow the listener to follow along.......
This came off a BBC CD from Uncut magazine recently celebrating the late John Peel.

ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN - LIVE
MAKE ME SHINE
I'm going to act like a big record company here for a moment and post the WRONG album cover for this track. My reasons are just as selfish as theirs. My reason may be the same exact reason why they do it. I posted this pic because I think you should run out and buy it. Heh.......
Its not coming out until next year, Jan. 23rd to be exact. I can't tell you exactly what is going to be on this album but my guess is that it is going to be pretty amazing stuff. There are some Echo and the Bunnymen tracks that are finally being released from their web site juke box, (Rollercoaster for one can be found in the box set). I'm still looking for Antelope.... which is based off of Bring on the Dancing Horses. Its powerful driving unrelenting sound makes that song a must have.
I came across this live version of, "Make Me Shine" by accident. I had no idea this was floating around. It is one of the better tracks off the, "Flowers" release. The details for the musical narrative in the intro are totally botched up but the rest of the song is handled nicely. This could have been a rehearsal. If this was a live track the band would be covered with fog and mysterious lights..... and I wouldn't have them any other way.

Ian McCulloch - CANDLELAND REVISITED
CANDLELAND WHERE ART THOU?
This was Ian McCulloch's first solo release. Ex- Echo and the Bunnymen frontman McCulloch would go on to release Mysterio while Echo fell apart. This was partly due to the fact that the drummer DeFrittes plowed his motorcycle into a tree and killed himself. Rumors floated that he tore his own arm off. I had no idea -- this was when I was hitting the clubs pretty heavy. They wouldn't cover stories like this in traditional rock magazines so we had to go on heresay.
Then McCullochs solo albums disappeared. You can get these on Amazon I'm sure but I haven't looked. Echo and the Bunnymen got another lead singer and came out with Reverberation.... which is a pretty decent effort but it definately missed McCullochs mysterious vocals.
This video is nice too. I sure wish I knew who the heck directed it. "Proud to Fall" was one of my favorite songs on this besides, "Horses Head". To me those two singles alone would have convinced me as a record exec to keep cranking this stuff out. It was interesting and made you think. It was melodic.
Instead Rap took over MTV, then Grunge, and then ... oddly Grunge Metal Rap dominated NYC radio and this gem became lost.
But don't let it get lost again..... enjoy.

Echo and the Bunnymen - Rescue - Point of Departure
The kings of escapism. There are two major chapters in my life. One is when I didn't listen to Echo and the Bunnymen, ( i was a little more simple minded -- all for the better some would say) then there was the one where I listened to Echo and the Bunnymen.... and then became more complicated.
I'll never forget when i saw them the first time thats for sure. It was Jan. 1988 at Hill Auditorium. I never seen so many trenchcoat wearing kids in one spot before. I was among them. Rescue.... was the first song they played and I was stunned with the whole thing. I was simply blown away with it.

Oh Mighty Lemon Drops --Where Art Thou?
In the confusing early 90's there was a mad scattering race of thoughts. There were too many bands that had style, substance and solid direction. However, too many of these bands were not easily classifiable so they were uncharasmatically heaped together in one pile and labled "New Music".
It didn't matter that much really in 1989 - we had John Peel, (and at the time I must confess I really beleived that we would have him forever).
Enter the Mighty Lemon Drops. Originally written off by disc jockeys, (the hip ones any ways) as an Echo and the Bunnymen Rip Off, this band proved to be worth a look. At the time the airwaves were being assaulted with the likes of Terrance Trent D'Arby and Go West. IT was also a time that existed before Nirvana.... so lets put things in perspective here.
This band used to tour and the shows were very interesting - lots of energy - and the music was very relevant. "Inside Out" has a way of drawing you back into their sound. But once you get there you will find that a lot of MLD tracks read as somewhat repetitive..... some would even say boring. Maybe I listened to them too many times to know that difference.
"Inside Out" is solid, strong, and the video is vibrant and still interesting after so much time. Dreary? Dreary is good unless it lacks style like a lot of angst riddled bands of the current moment.
The genius lies in its simplicity.
