This is what I get for not listening to the BBC for months on end. Yes, I have been busy with my business and have dropped the ball on my pop culture sensibilities. This band sort of snuck up on me on the BBC. I looked into it and realized I was missing out on something near great!

Ah, but such is the way of life in the world of pop. It is those unexpected times that you find gems in the dust. I cannot figure out where these guys are from. They only have a few singles and a couple of albums I believe. They are on ITUNES but this song is not featured which is too bad - because in a short time it becomes very memorable.

HOUSE OF LOVE - DESTROY THE HEART

Yes, I admit -- I do hear a bit of Echo and the Bunnymen in here -- but the middle of this song gets sort of lost. I lose the narrative when I hear the song. When you watch the video it does tend to go forward in a very clear cut singular direction. But then again -- so does the camera so the two of them sort of coincide and allow the listener to follow along.......

This came off a BBC CD from Uncut magazine recently celebrating the late John Peel.

Here is a little rundown on comedian Bernard Manning:
Born in the Ancoats district of Manchester, Manning is of working class Irish Catholic extraction and was an altar boy. He also claims Jewish roots and to be a descendant of immigrants from Sevastopol. A sign which reads 'Shalom' adorns the front door of his home in Middleton, Greater Manchester.

Like many other comedians of the time (including the cast of The Goon Show), Manning had had little thought of entertainment as a career, until his national service posted him to Germany. To pass the time, Manning began to sing popular standards to entertain his fellow soldiers. He proved to be so good at this that eventually he ended up putting on shows at the weekends: when he began to charge admittance (and audiences didn't drop off), he realised that there was the possibility of making money from showbusiness.

This video is hilarious. The response from this sensitive material... THE SMITHS is going to get quite a response. Partly because it has so many deep rooted feelings in so many people. Simply said, this material is seriously tied to some strong emotional bonds that ... hopefully in many cases have been since abandoned or forgotten about altogether. Now, you will most likely be tied to this music for the music and not for the insecurities that may have existed when you were younger.

Fuck off all you soft twats. If you don't like Bernard then why can't you just ignore him and not slam him. I'd much rather hear Bernard's jokes than lefties like Jo Brand and Ben Elton telling jokes that aren't funny, just crude and disgusting.

BOW WOW WOW - WELCOME TO THE NEW ERA

THIS IS ENTERTAINMENT.

This song is deceptively simple. But when it came out it ushered in a whole new form of entertainment.... namely the rock video. IT also brought in a whole new wave (.... eh.. NEW WAVE... GET IT?... ) new wave of sounds, colors and visual forms, (not to mention some off the wall haircuts).

This was the invention of Malcom McLaren, (sex pistols, adam ant etc). This band also had the tribal look like his other creations. Artist Vivianne Westwood created their clothing and encouraged them to look as bizarre as possible. When this look came to America it really shook up the airwaves. Kids became addicted to MTV. Mostly because no one really knew what they were going to show next..... that was the fun.

These new record covers really sort of trivialize the bands. They immediately slap THE BIG 80'S on all the releases. But in reality this was not about THE BIG 80'S. The entertainment industry had to let these bands in the MTV network. Americans had very few rock videos to promote. The other thing is that the original album art has been discarded. This is what made these bands notorious in the first place. Controversial. It got people talking. Crikey, the girl singer was only 14 years old when this band started. If you didn't know that then this band loses quite a bit of punch.

Everyone thought there was a British Invasion in 1980. But in reality the Europeans were the first ones to create rock videos. America was behind and had no choice but to show these acts on the MTV network. Eventually Americans would create their own rock videos, (really over budget productions.... seriously) and would filter out the British influence. Then the whole thing was dropped down to the lowest common denominator and became a rap network.... for the most part.

The Brits are still cranking out amazing POP as we speak, (check out the BBC online, or AP Magazine) but we don't celebrate their bands as much in this country like we used to. I actually heard Madness on my hometown radio in Muskegon in 1982 and I thought that was really strange. This music had powerful reach. IT would be the equivalent of hearing the latest BLUR song in my hometown today..... You see? It just isn't going to happen. The early 80's were indeed a magical time.

I really don't know how powerful Malcom McLaren was in the music scene. According to Virgin Records CEO Richard Branson, he was pretty influential. Its difficult to judge exactly what happened in reality. Malcom has a way of making himself shine brilliantly like a superstar. But the truth was this entire evolution of the post punk movement never made it into the books until the late 80's. I'd like to think Malcom was responsible for all this ecentric living. I definately can say he had a vision but I don't know how much of this entire genre is attributed to him directly.

I like Austin Powers. I like Ming Tea. I like the BBC.

This song gets under your skin and then takes a metal cheese shredder and grinds on your raw nerve endings. BUT IN A GOOD WAY. Susanna Hoffs from the Bangles is in this clip too.

I ilke the cut away shots where Mike Meyers is flipping all over the set like a fish out of water. His choice of garb is interesting too. The band Cream used to really dress this way so did Jimi Hendrix's Experience... wel.. everyone did for that matter it seemed. I think i even saw Sammy Davis Jr. decked out in these threads a few times.
