The Truth Hurts --- Don't It ?

From our friends in SOHO, NEW YORK -- CENTER OF THE ART WORLD AND POP CULTURE......................

I found this pretty amusing..... check out the entire site if you will.....
SoHo Weekly News Online - Huh

I agree .. with a sense of humor of course. I could do with out Britney Spears sinead o'conner imitation on the news every 15 minutes.... But then again, maybe its a good thing.

VAN HALEN - HAIL TO THE MIGHTY !!!

"WE WAITED FOR 20 YEARS -- TO SEE IF ANYTHING WOULD TOP IT..... AND WE ENDED UP WITH WHEEZER"
cantu as quoted at recent Royal Oak happening

This is a great live action clip even though the quality is crappy. The song is handled really well.. This was in 1983. I saw them the following year in 1984 in DC at the Capital Center. They call it something else now......

As you know Van Halen is reforming this summer for 40 cities. I would like to see them really kick out something amazing. I liked Roth in the band over any of the other singers. When you think about it they weren't a band for very long. Van Halen has trudged on without Dave for about..... well... 20 Years.

Even Howard Stern said they were better with Roth than without in his book, "Private Parts". I have to agree I think I played Van Halen III a total of 3 times.

Its interesting to see Alex Van Halen cook on the drums as he tries to out do his brother Eddie. Alex uses huge drum sticks.... "trees" as he says. Its amazing how much he pounds on them and creates this cocaphony of noise.

"Hang Em High" is not a song that quickly comes to mind when one is talking about Van Halen. I memorized every track on the Diver Down LP so for me its no big deal. In fact, I memorized all six of the original albums because they carried such firey intensity.

Eddie makes this song look so easy to play even though its incredibly complicated.

VAN HALEN - HANG EM' HIGH

THE TOY DOLLS - NELLIE THE ELEPHANT

".............OOOOH THE CHICKS WON'T LIKE THAT !!!!"

You know what? Thats too bad !!

This is a juvenille guys band...... the Toy Dolls.... are beyond brilliant. That is what its all about.

Now that the 2000's are here the women market is bombarded with chicky films, dramas and their own networks, (WE, Lifetime for Women etc.). So you see? It all balances out quite nicely......

But note, that I said that this was a JUVENILLE GUYS BAND... Its not a ... "girl i wanna love you all night ...id die for you kinda band" either..... and its not a "im gonna get angry and smash up everything" kinda band either.... and its certainly not a.... "im gonna get depressed and cut my young wrists" kinda band either....... BUT.. it is a juvenille band. Just not that kind.

This track, "Nellie" is paired up with Anime animation and it works. Its odd, ( like Olga and the other guys in the Toy Dolls ) but it works.

Check out the official web site:
http://www.thetoydolls.com/

Imagine a punk band with guys who really know how to play their instruments. AND its a heavy metal band too without all the lame burnout overtones..... You'd have a pretty hip, kick-ass, optimistic band... wouldn't ya think?

This track is old.... about 20 years but its pretty amazing even now. I rather like it. But I like it even more when its matched up to this brilliant little cartoon.

I saw these guys in Chicago, (KING OF ALL CITIES)

THE ADVERTS - BORED TEENAGERS - 1977

"LIVE, KICKED UP AND VENOMOUS"

Heres what they tell us from Wikipedia
The Adverts were an English punk rock band who formed in 1976 and broke up in 1980. They are mainly remembered for their singles "One Chord Wonders" and "Gary Gilmore's Eyes", as well as being one of the first English punk bands to prominently feature a female member.

Nice eh?

But what they left out was that female number sparked a bit of attention... Gaye Advert somewhat disliked the attention of being attractive to the male audience... she just wanted to rock.

This particular track is quite brilliant. It is featured on the live 100 club album and that version is revved up and at a full tilt frenzy. Its quite good to listen to. I like that version a bit better than this live one.

The track that got them somewhat famous with the music critics of course is, "Gary Gilmores Eyes". This taken straight from the headlines. Gilmore was an American Pscyhopath who murdered some people in the late 70's. I don't think that particular track is of much interest - its gloomy as it should be but other than the stark title lacks real musical punch.

ABC - GET NEAR THIS

ABC -- THIS SHITS GREAT !

Sorry to be so blunt, but I'm a man.... Lets not futz around. This is great music. Yes yes yes its a bit limp wristed on the pop bent but so what.... get a load of the lot of unintelligible angst ridden gristle we have to endure today on commercial radio.

This shits brilliant.

I like the sparse visuals .The power of the chord in the lens. Its RIGHT IN THE LENS MAN! cHECK Out the wild flying cam thats doing a high angled arc over the band. Check out how the singer is flat on his back watching the entire thing unfold. Check out the multiple edits. This was DONE WITH STYLE MAN. This was before monotoned chroma keyed effects and rapid fire editing and stylish graphics that scream NOTHING ... at 120 decibels.

I don't care if you don't like it.... I really don't. But my god, where is THE STYLE IN TODAYS VISUALS. i WHINED about this on the Kinks, Do It Again video. Sometimes things are classic for a reason. I know the bald guy in this video adds nothing more than a fly you want to swat.... but he adds a bit of comedy relief.

Its STYLE MAN. Its ilke.... ELLE magazine with a pulse. in fact this song was featured as the background music to a Miss America profile of some red hot blonde cuties on a beach waterskiing back in the 80's. It was perfect yes. I liked it YES...... Should there be more attempts at videos like this?

Yes why not.

I like the rhythm of this piece too - it moves. It shakes... its got a sense of purpose. Is this a coheisve look at my entire music collection.... certainly not. But I will say this. Its very interesting. I was blasting this best of CD ABSOLUTELY a few years back. My buddy goes... what is this? Man.... I forgot how many cool songs ABC put out.

Yes yes.. ITS CLASSIC I TELL YOU.

ABC - BE NEAR ME

SQUEEZE - THIS IS GREAT - THIS IS LOVE

Valentines Day.... thats today isn't it? Eh.. er.. I think.....

But let me tell you something that I REALLY LOVE... Squeeze. Definately not a chicky band -- this one is straight from the heart. What makes this band endure the tests of time is due to the fact that this bands tells stories.... and tells them very well. In the span of just 3 minutes you get an entire story of what happened in the life time of an average schlugg.... He doens't want to get dirty on the dance floor, he doesn't want to steal your drugs, he doesn't even want to get nasty in the back of a cab..... if anything he just wants to live his life.... and hang out with his best mates at the local pub.... and kick out sweet jams like this.

A recent re-run of the Sopranos really nailed it. The thugs were getting into the music biz and these mob cretins were creating rock music, ala... The Smashing Pumpkins.. and this record producer blurts out, "This shits horrible.... I was around a long time and I met them all Hendrix, Joplin , The Who...etc. Those kids had a spark, they were magic, and I didn't even like their music .... but these kids today... especially this band you brought in here.... they got nothing... these guys are nowhere".

I feel the same way about a lot of bands we must endure today. Squeeze was a real band and they had real lyrics. You had to have somewhat of a brain to appreciate them. Which is probably why they never got really HUGE in their time. Oh... they did alright in fact they did more than just... OKAY. But they never really got as huge as some of these other acts that I won't even bother mentioning.
Yes yes... I first seen these guys appear on the Uncle Floyd Show in Newark New Jersey. Me and Floyd Vivino have good taste.

This stuff is like a great wine..... These are finely crafted pop songs.
