THE REAL CONTROL - JOY DIVISION
"CONTROL: TRANSMISSION RECIEVED...."
The overall effect of the movie, "CONTROL" made one feel out of sorts. At times you feel as if you are looking over Ian Curtis' life as an intruder. The film comes off simplistically in the beginning and you get panoramic viewpoints of what this movie is going to bring. It takes your concentration off the words that Ian is saying to you as a viewer. I missed the main part of the focus because I was trying to get a feel of the world he was in.
Ridiculous but true. I caught this subtlety the second time around. There is a full message there of course and the film is well constructed and whole.
Anton Corbijn, the director of the film, stated recently that everything he remembers he does so in black and white. Corbijn was the original photographer, he is of Dutch origin, and was there in the early days and snapped the compositions. But these formed his opinions on how the film was going to ultimately look like.
The band in the film did their own sound. But this sound, although impressive, lacks the total starkness that the studio releases had. That is what made the Joy Division sound so memorable because at times it was very eerie. They knew exactly what they wanted to create and what they wanted the audience to experience.
It still bothers me. You cannot shake it too easily.

THE TUBES - TALK TO YOU LATER - "Fee Waybill - Rocks The House With A Snarl"
"Fee Waybill - Rocks The House With A Snarl"
I could never figure out what these guys were trying to accomplish. This track is brilliant but the rest of the stuff off this album was hard on the eardrums. "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, (Attack)" was excruciating and "powertools" left me daft and embarrassed even when no one was around me.
Still, Fee was quite popular. His sound was FM radio ready in 83' and radio stations paid attention to him. They gave him lots of airplay too like on MTV and SCTV where they were guest stars for an episode of, "The Fishin' Musician" with John Candy. They also did a rocking tune called, 'Sushi Sue" and released some videos for SONY when the SONY 45 tapes were the thing to buy. This must appear like ancient history though with all this Internet glory going on in this wacky world.

THE TRUTH - PLAYGROUND - Dennis Greives
THE TRUTH - PLAYGROUND - On IRS Records
This is an another clip of a previous post on THE TRUTH, (Dennis Greives from Nine Below Zero). In the previous post it came with a somewhat unwanted extra of X singing BURNING HOUSE OF LOVE which I didn't particulary like.
I like the IRS tag in the beginning of the song. Here is what is interesting about this clip. Sure on one hand it is a total WHO rip off because its thrashy power chords with crashing drum rolls. But it works. THE TRUTH released this in 1985 and it is literally out of print.
I think its the most brilliant thing they ever did. The other albums they put out weren't as gripping as this. I also liked Grievsies later releases with Nine Below Zero but he really takes the R and B thing to a sleeping lull. Sometimes its amazing and sometimes its very subtle.
I liked the Townsend jump in the beginning. Its almost as if the UK kids had to come over here and show us how to do rock music. This really stuck in my head for years. The album - should you find it - is extremely expensive now and rare. I remember it being absolutely amazing in just about every way.
You really needed an album label like IRS back in the day. There was a lot of drivel going around with the devil and 666 stuff in the high schools. I was bored with it. I wanted something exciting. The edits are all equal length here for the most part. Its got a tempo to it.
Funny how you start to notice those sort of things when you actually do editing. Back in the 80's a lot of this stuff was done by hand before digital desktop editing....
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The only computers we had in 85' were those crappy Macs that were the size of a bowling ball.
The opening is from Back Porch Video. The Smartest kids in my neighborhood. I grew up in the same town as they did and used to watch this show growing up in Ann Arbor. They were the only kids that understood what I wanted to see and what mattered most. It wasn't rap music which at the time was not widely accepted as being a serious musical form. The things that captured my attention was bands like these.

PAUL SHAFFER - DRESS COOL - DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW
I remember seeing this but for some reason it stayed stuck in my head. After seeing it again I am not convinced that this was a comedy piece. I think Paul Shaffer was trying to be serious in this rock(?) video because the song is somewhat...... real?
Look for the guy who dresses up in christmas tinsel. I remember that scene. There is a lot of production that went behind this with stop motion animation and so on.
This was recorded in the mid-80's when David Letterman was really picking up a lot of fans. I would put this in 1985 - 1986. The whole period of 1984 - 1986 was sort of a high moment for the show because it was somewhat unpredictable and fun to watch. 1987 brought on a lot of attention to some of the things I took for granted like the TOP TEN list. When that segment rolled out in the 87' season they had monster CGI graphics and I really thought the production was trying too hard. I sort of lost interest in the show after that.
When it moved to CBS it had a whole different vibe to it. Remember too that in 1986 Eddie Van Halen used to play with Shaffer in the band. That was kind of weird to see since Eddie was always considered somewhat of a cult hero.
This clip picks up on the eccentricities of the 80's and how fun the early shows of Letterman used to be before they went big budget.

DEPECHE MODE - STRIPPED
FROM DEPECHE MODE 101
The 80's brought on a ton of self loathing, emotionally stunted musical genius frontmen. Morrissey being one of them -- David Gahan being the other. There was something so dark about Depeche Mode that behind all those smiles it was hard to accept this as happy music. "People are People" made them popular on the radio but they were a lot darker than what they appeared to be. Yet, they were fascinating too.
And.... no it never surprised me when Gahan tried to take his own life. I was somewhat surprised though at the amount of drugs he took. Its amazing to see what kind of effect they had over their audience.

DEPECHE MODE - STRANGE LOVE
This was recorded during their height. I heard every version of this song when it first came out. It was super popular. There was a 12" mix, a dance mix, a club mix, you get the idea. There was a ton of different versions and some had just a little differences to set them apart. But I really thought they all sounded alike. I couldn't wait for the day when I could listen to this song and not hate it.
And that day is today.
There is a video of footage being shown on the sides of buildings that is great. This black and white version is nice too and it works on several levels. The confrontation of the word love appears in the palm of their hands. They laugh like schoolboys but the overall look is stark and startling. It worked wonders on me as I saw this brief clip shown on a commercial for SPIN magazine. I remember that entire sequence..... To me, that took balls. To confront an emotion in such a way.
... It was is there was some attempt to meet the emotion halfway. Yet on the other hand it was wearing ones heart on its sleeve. Still, I thought it was amazing.
I saw them around this time.

FEMALE TROUBLES - CHA CHA HEELS
Ah yes... this brings back sordid memories. This movie is horrific. Its Tragi-Comedic. And on the other hand it just plain sucks. But it does have some pretty good moments. These movies resurfaced in the late 80's where they were much appreciated.
The 80's were an amazing time. You could release just about anything on video tape and it would get rented. Thats where I first ran into this John Waters classic. Waters was an interesting fellow until he decided to turn into Walt Disney. Its amazing what a little money can do to some people. This new thing, "HairSpray" is just depressing and high budget. I prefer Waters when he had nothing to show in his stable but this morose heap of an actor, Divine.

THE ALARM - MAKING OF THE ALARM
"Up Close With The Alarm - and Mike Peters"
This is inside the bands perspective of putting together a video. Peters and crew called it quits years ago until a recent VH1 show got them all together. Here they are perfecting their signature sound.
They are interesting because of their stage presence. Notice the cameras and mics coming from the ceiling like a boxers mic. This adds height to the performance. Also the multiple images being shown over the band adds a bit of visual dynamicism.
These guys really carried over the look and upbeat positive feel that created the image for IRS RECORDS, (which is now defunct). There was a lot of imagery and text floating over the bands videos and live performances. This was the case for a lot of the early IRS bands and added to their complex nature. All of these bands in the early days were quite interesting.
The Alarm is still producing this type of look and it really does cut against the whiney pop diva subculture that exists today. The other thing that sets them apart from competition is their ability to deliver sharp guitar hooks that jar up against one another. Somewhere in all that chaos this Dublin band is still able to deliver a likeable melody. When the entire thing is delivered and signed over you want to listen to it again and again. It has this long lasting effect that so many bands today seem to miss.

TAY ZONDAY TESTING THE PATIENCE OF AMERICA
"ONE OF THE WEIRDEST MOMENTS IN TELEVISION"
Confusing yes.... like the Kennedy Assasination.
Look at the faces of the people in the audience as he sings this .... er.. song. I haven't seen looks like that since Andy Kaufman jumped on the stage and sang his ridiculous songs. I got to give this guy credit because he is so upbeat and friendly. You want to like this guy.
But the song is absurd.
His speaking voice is just as low and strange as his singing voice. The audience warms up to him as he is interviewed. It is an interesting thing to watch.

SQUEEZE - Michael McDonald Could Have Out Done Them Better ???
You gotta read this review.....
allenbroadway (1 week ago)
I think Steely Dan and Michael McDonald could have done it better
Comparing Squeeze, (a great UK Brit Pop band WUNDERKIND from the 80s')
to the dreary sounds of Michael (pass me a doobie) Doobie Brother McDonald or Steely Dan is a terrible unforgiveable mistake of a comparrison. Each had very different pop sensibilities.
For example, Squeeze will put you in a happy upbeat place. Where McDonald puts you in a literal Mc Donalds NEAR CLOSING TIME where you are running out of time and cell phone minutes listening to him warble over the loudspeaker while you are on a business road trip -- wondering what your entire purpose in this world REALLY IS.... ??
And Steely Dan makes you feel like ordering a 7 and 7 and sticking your head in a pothole and calling it a day. After all, you cannot get a time machine back to 1977 so why bother.
But you don't get those feelings when you listen to Squeeze. And man get a load of JOOLS HOLLAND on the keyboard. GREAT STUFF. I also adore the endless guitar solos that just build and build and build. There is so much life in those builds. I just find so much depth in those songs. It is unreal.
The last I heard Mc Donald was doing AT&T commercials.... (LISSSSEN BAYBEEEEE ETC.)

THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY - MEETS THE MANSON FAMILY
"WE'LL MAKE YOU HAPPY... (MORE OR LESS)"
This is amusing. Considering that it stems from one of the most horrific crimes of its time this will actually put a smile on your face --- in a humorous way. There is something pop culture related to this clip that I want to point out. There is a rumor on the Internet that Charles Manson was supposed to be one of the original Monkees. I doubt that this was true after listening to his recordings, (which are more like the Velvet Underground in appearance).
Still, when you look at how young, (and confused) the killers of these crimes were it boggles the mind. Its a real contrast at how evil these people were and its further confusing when you consider the reasons why they felt they must kill. To add further confusion it is interesting to watch the killers reflect on their crimes as if THEY were the REAL victims after all this time.
Its something that should be investigated if only so history will not be tempted to repeat itself. It is troubled time that needs to be dealt with.

HOUSE OF LOVE - DESTROY THE HEART
Yes, I admit -- I do hear a bit of Echo and the Bunnymen in here -- but the middle of this song gets sort of lost. I lose the narrative when I hear the song. When you watch the video it does tend to go forward in a very clear cut singular direction. But then again -- so does the camera so the two of them sort of coincide and allow the listener to follow along.......
This came off a BBC CD from Uncut magazine recently celebrating the late John Peel.

CAPTAIN SENSIBLE - HERE IS THE GOOD POP - HAPPY TALK
"HAPPY TALK ---- One of The Great Unknown POP Songs You Never Heard"
This is one of the greatest songs that existed in its time period. It came out one Captains solo efforts when he wasn't acting like a revved up maniac with THE DAMNED. This album allowed Sensible to do some pretty off the cuff things you may not expect from the UK's First PUNK band. This is a great effort.
Around this time it was rumored that Sensible was paying for Robyn Hitchcock to write songs and to create music. Hitch's band THE SOFT BOYS had recently broken up and now he was solo. Sensible heard his music and thought it was important enough to support. I have only heard this rumor by club kids growing up in this time period but was never able to validate this curious fact.
This song HAPPY TALK was featured in a few comedies of late. Its whimsical like Sensible himself. The other notable songs on this effort include YANKS WITH GUNS. If you can locate this on disc its worth owning. Unfortunately ITUNES does not carry it.

HEY GIRLS... ITS BIG TRACK !!!!
BIG TRACK = LOTS OF HOT CHICKS
In the 80's you had a few choices. If you played with action figures that meant that you
were a homosexual.... seriously. If you played with a ten speed and ...... BIG TRACK.. that meant
that you scored ALL THE CHICKS......
RIIIIIIIIIIGHT.
Course if you wanted to be REALLY COOL you would bitch slap the principal in the
lunch room like our colleague and criminal.... Jeff Simpson. And to put it another way
if you wanted to be THE KING OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD then you had to risk jail time,
felonies, and grand larceny.
Seriously.
the Horrors of Flood Junior High
This is a very tall order to fulfill when you are 12. Still in our neighborhood we had young
men and women aspiring to great heights of ... er um... greatness. It was scary going to Junior High back in the day. Oh sure, we didn't have guns back then in our schools but you sure
could get knifed up pretty good like a slab of apple wood smoked bacon.
But I'm getting WAY off course here. Simply said, Junior High in Stratford Connecticut was a lot like the county lock up. The food was on par to boot. Scary shit.
THE BIG QUESTION IS......
DID THE CHICKS... REALLY get impressed with Milton Bradleys Big Track? Unlike my 13 year old counterparts opinion I beg to differ. My guess was they probobly did not.
Get impressed that is. This toy in my opinion sucked balls. Due to the simple fact that it had no doors or action figures to go with it. The windows were painted on in the form of a decal. This was kind of a weird toy. Notice that the kid playing with it has to interact with a dog of all things and a bored father who is trying to read the paper on his day off. That is the level of ACTION you get with this toy. FOr added charm you had to lay your action figures on top of the BIG TRACK and pretend that they somehow could coexist in a doorless and windowless society.
Milton Bradley never did come out with anything to go with this toy. You had to supply your own dog and ... bored dad to partake in the great BIG TRACK experience. This toy offered little emotional comfort back in the day. It hardly took your mind off the mindless monsters that clogged up our public school system waiting to cave our young heads in.
I never got my ass kicked up and down the block ..THANK GOD. Nor was I shot or stabbed while I attended public school.
But this toy offered little escapism as the 80's began. It brought very little peace of mind. But most of all.... The thing that i remember most about this toy was that it sucked.. BIG TIME.

THE NEW FAT BOYS - BIG WALMART BUTTS
This video takes a lot of balls. There is nothing wishy washy about these guys and they totally understand comedy. They understand confrontation. If they are somewhat lucky they may actually get fame and fortune. This is the sort of thing that can get you on the JIMMY KIMMEL SHOW. Seriously.

EDITH MASSEY - DONT LEAVE ME GATOR - NO NO NO
"A THOUSAND BELLY LAUGHS LATER -- THIS ONE STILL FLOORS ME"
FROM THE FILM.... FEMALE TROUBLE... WITH EDITH MASSEY.....
Yes, I am aware that this film is truly terrible. But that is half the beauty. The acting in this flim is beyond deplorable but thats part of the charm of John Waters, the director. I have no idea of actress Edith Massey had a low I.Q. My guess is that she probably did.
The 90's are over. Its time we forget the whole,,,, "politeness" act.
Lets face it this film is just plain hard to watch. But as you watch it you will find it even harder to take your eyes off of it. This thing is really demented, strange and sad. Through it all there is a rainbow glimmer of comedy in it in very small proportions.
Massey by the way had a punk band in the L.A. punk movement in the early - mid 80's. I find this very hard to believe. Yet, I would have liked to have seen her perform and wouldn't mind even finding some of her recordings. This of course is for educational purposes only.

XTC - FUNK POP A ROLL - SERIOUSLY NOW
"XTC - DESIGNED TO DRIVE YOU UPBEAT SKYWARD AND MAD"
I never knew these guys had a video for this song off the album MUMMER. Its the final track on the CD. I should know because I played mine so many times I wore the damned thing out. Its hardly playable now. It was a great way to end the CD as it is a fairly upbeatable sort of sound.
Just the sort of thing you never seem to get enough of these days.
The frenetic cut up video pieces jerk and fly about in a somewhat predictable pattern. Its welcomed to see this sort of thing appear after all this time. Note how every shot in this sequence is not dyed green or red and there seems to be an abundant overload of musicianship.

THE ALARM - STRENGTH
"THE GREATEST SOUND FROM THE MID - 80'S --
WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THE STORM BROKE?"
There was a lot of crap in the 80's. There was a lot of crap in the 90's. But then lets face it . There is a lot of crap today too. Somewhere in all that crap there are usually great bands LIKE THE ALARM who get shuffled behind permalayers of garbage. You're job as a culture archeologist is to dig them out with a toy shovel and try to enjoy their brilliance. The Alarm is one of those amazing bands that got shuffled aside.
The one thing you need to understand is that the Alarm is from Dublin. They are powerful and they were on a powerful label..... IRS RECORDS.... which is now defunct.
There hasn't been a record label this ballsy in years. So bands with style and a radical calling to sustain get undiscovered. This is very unfortunate.
The Alarm just got back together and are kicking out new amazing sounds. I say great for them because they are truly amazing to watch. They have style and a lot of heart. Its never a put on.

TROG - JOAN CRAWFORDS FINEST HOUR
"JOAN CRAWFORD IN THE MOVIE TROG: almost as horrible as the child abuse SHE INFLICTED ON HER OWN STEP CHILDREN"
When Crawford starred in the very ultra hilarious TROG she was a full blown alcoholic and lunatic. This is her last movie and it came out in 1970. Its meant to be dead serious. If you are are....lucky... you can see this on late night television. Course, I doubt that if you find it that late at night that you can truly consider yourself lucky.
There is a scene in here where he learns his ABC'S I kid you not. There is also a scene where he learns how to play with a toy choo choo train and learn his colors. He sees the color red and goes bananas. This is great stuff. Its a serious study of mindless behavior.
Still, all in all, its worth owning.
Well, not owning teeny boppers... but its worth viewing.

FREAKSHOW PEOPLE OF YESTERDAY PART 3
These freaks actually liked performing... well... some of them. It gave them an income. But then again this is according to the FREAKSHOW MUSEUM in Coney Island.
In 1976 my mother met a woman in a freakshow tent with a face the size of a fifty cent peice. The event was so disturbing that she blocked it out of her memory. To this day she refuses to ackowledge it even happened. It happened in a town called Muskegon, Michigan. Ironically it is also the town where I was born. I remember this event due to the fact that i found a pamphlet that spelled out this tiny womans life story. She sold them to people who visited her and this was a source of income. This woman sat on a tiny throne as if she was royalty.
As a youth I was somewhat terrified at the prospect of going into a freakshow. But I do remember the grotesque posters. These were large sheets of canvas and horrible depictions of these people inside. As a scare tactic it worked on me. I didnt have the guts to walk into these shows. As I got older these shows altogether disappeared. I still found myself fascinated with the spectacle of them.

FREAKS - PARTY ON !
"The Infamous Wedding Scene - Banned in 50 States"
"Gooba Gabba" became the outcry for THE RAMONES. This movie inspired all of our modern day freaks like Rob Zombie etc. Although Generation Y is most likely to not give a shit about this or literally anything else. This movie inspired all of our great modern day thinkers even though it was banned in 50 states.
This film comes from America and was created sometime around the Wizard of Oz. The thought at MGM was that if Americans loved the munchkins then they would do backflips for deformed and crippled freaks. The end result was that the industry laid a giant goose egg. This became the ugly secret of Hollywood and was shelved out of pure embarrasment.
When it was released it scared the SHIT out of people and sent women screaming out of the theater. You will have to watch the entire film to see what I am talking about. This is one disturbing piece of cinema. I mean they FREAKS retaliate and transform the evil bride into a chicken for crying out loud.
I still never got a good definition for GOOBA GABBA or where it came from. I never got an explanation for the origin of this phrase or what inspired it. All I know is that director Todd Browning was basically kicked out of motion pictures for creating this psychotic work. Browning was the director on the Dracula films.
There is a scene supposedly that had the cast of the freakshow walking into a courtroom after they cut up the woman into a chicken and turn her into a sideshow act. I read this in a film book and the author claimed that the ending was lost. They showed the freaks walking into a NYC courtroom. I am serious. This is what I read. I think this is total bullshit.
You should rent this.
Its worth it.
You may not find it disturbing. We have become pretty hard in this country. This type of film will never be shot again. We can detect hideous deformities before they are born now with modern day technology. Still its amazing that anyone would want to pay and see this back in the day. Americans were pretty morbid for demanding this type of entertainment. Freakshows were a big thing in carnivals for many years. Now with humanistic lobbyist groups these types of things are becoming a big thing of the past.

This was one of the most original sounding bands of its time. Its a punk band that plays with a musical range. That was one of the things that really impressed me when I first came across these guys. They could work a fret board.
They could also tear the house down.

ROBYN HITCHCOCK - QUEEN ELVIS - LIVE
"Taken During The High Period - at Tower Records, (When TR Was Valid!)"
1989 was a wondrous time. New Music was unclassified and YET it was making money and fans all around. This was the time to really follow music. The record companies were all on the phone clamoring for a definition waiting to classify EVERYTHING IN SITE. But it was too hard to do.....
While record PR people were at odds records, yes records, were selling. The entire CD revolution was in a slow turning groove and this was years before Itunes. Tower Records was THE place to get anything you wanted at the time. There seemed to be a lot more of them around back in those days.... And while all of this was happening there was a lot of great songs that were getting pumped out into the public.
Note: At this time nobody needed permission to do anything.
ROBYN HITCHCOCK GOES ACOUSTIC
Ironically I never got a chance to see the Egyptians... technically. I did, however, see the Soft Boys at an impromptu gig at the Bowery Ballroom and reformed once again for the Underwater Moonlight Tour a few years back. Seeing Hitch on the EYE Tour was amazing in its own right. I wanted to see him with a band and go electric. I did not want to see a tour or listen to an entire album that was done acoustically...... but his stuff was different.
The longer he toured and released albums of this nature the better the sound became. If you listen to him sing on the Jonathan Demme concert film he has elevated his acoustic sound to something pretty powerful. It wasn't until this sound was taken to its zenith did I see him play no less than 6 separate times.
*** The funny thing about the album EYE was that it was released on Twin Tone records. This label was home for the Replacements and other thrashy bands. Before the press could jump all over Hitchcock with petty criticisms the record was already recorded and released and distributed.
And there are some gems on this recording. There are several tracks on here that are worth owning. They defy stereotyping of any kind.

THIS FREAKS ON A ROLL
This clip is from some cable access tv show... Here is the official description....
I have no idea what this is supposed to be, if I recall correctly this is a clip of a videotape that had been circulating in the underground tape trading scene of the early 90s, often popping up on public access cable. Apparently it's a proposal of some movie that the hippie in the video had wrote and he's looking for funding for his freak out. If anyone has ANY idea what this is and where to find more info, please comment this video.

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - ME AND MY FRIENDS
FROM THE ALBUM ... THE UPLIFT MOFO PARTY PLAN
This was THE KING ALBUM for many months. The reason why this was such a great album is that the Peppers weren't really a message band when this was released. They were fast, funky and silly. I admired them for that.
This was also the last album Hillel would appear.

Andy Kaufman did Elvis impersonations while the KING was still alive. Apparently Elvis actually liked the way Andy impersonated him. Andy was THE ONLY one who did imitations of him while he was alive. This was before all the exploitation.
The 70's are long dead and gone, so enjoy this classic gem from the past why don'tcha.

THE CHARLATANS UK - HAPPEN TO DIE
Classic live Charlatans - great hammond from late great Rob Collins (more)
Try as I might I could not locate the lyrics for this song. This is the first time I heard that this song was about their keyboardest Rob Collins who died in some horrible accident.
The other thing which I found somewhat interesting is that singer Tim Burgess looks like the retard, (Leo DeCaprio) in, "Whats Eating Gilbert Grape?" He has the ability to somewhat defy age in his early clips.
The other thing about the Charlatans which is also interesting is that they're always backed up with a great beat. This incredible sound is matched up with incredibly dark lyrics at times. There are moments of great uplift and the overall effect is overpowering.
Even at their worst, they are worth looking at.

THE DAMNED - NEW ROSE ( I GOT IT GOOD -- MAN !!!!)
the DAMNED - NEW ROSE
1977 -- Promo Video. Written by Brian James. New Rose was the first single by 'The Damned.' It was released on October 22, 1976. It is considered the first punk record by many, insofar as the first song of a musical genre can be identified.
This video is great. They looked great. Nobody told these guys what to do or what to look like. Singer Dave Vanian used to dig graves for a living. When it came time to switch over from grave digger to lead singer he took on a vampire look and it was unexpected but great. This was a total switch from the whole KISS look. This black on white makeup became his signature look for years to come as the band under went multiple phases of change.
This band never needed permission to do anything.

This is one of the best songs from the imported album of the same title. There are other tracks on this cd worth hearing, "How Could You Leave Us?" and "North Country Boy" .... Great stuff. Its one of my favorites but it has been hard to come by lately. Thank goodness for Amazon.com.

"STRAIGHT FROM THE SORDID VAULTS OF YESTERYEAR"
"Just When You Thought IT Was Safe To Go Back To The Peep Show"
This clip is very strange. It starts out somewhat ... normal... but it sure doesn't end that way. Still... its worth watching. Its amazing that this is what it took to get people excited in our previous generation.
This is from the film Teaseramma.....
Thats Bettie Page in the beginning. The previous generation knew a thing or two about how to be super sleazy. There are some stunts that are shown in the film, "The Notorious Bettie Page" that I found really strange. I thought I had stumbled upon every way there was to run a scam or a heist but these oldsters taught me a thing or two....

JOHN BELUSHI - WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS
"JERKING THE RUG UNDER THE FEET OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC"
Watching Belushi trample the stage with these antics is a lot like watching vandalism in full force. Rob Reiner, the Meathead, did his best to warm up the crowd. Belushi steps in and does some wild take on Joe Cocker. Whats interesting about this is that this song was performed by Cocker in the WoodStock film.
The first few episodes of Saturday Night Live came off like it lacked a format. Belushi's first appearances were centered around a bee sketch. There was not a whole lot of comedy work being done. The second show was hogged up by Simon and Garfunkel. As a kid I kept hoping that there was a two song limit. These guys literally HOGGED UP THE ENTIRE EPISODE. There was a lot of drug and 60's references.
Sometimes the films were okay. Most times they were pretty terrible. Belushi called Simon a "musical wimp" according to the backstage history.
So when the writers finally turned the stage over to Belushi he was ready. What happened next stunned audience members. They were too overwhelmed to clap or cheer. This got my attention as a kid and I latched onto him as he was a stand out character.

THE REPLACEMENTS - I WILL DARE - LIVE
"FROM THE YEAR... 1991?"
1991 NY (from comp. DVD "We don't wanna be on TV".
The video may have come out in 1991 but the band broke up before that. I know because in the early 90's I was seriously bummed out with all the moronic tuneless bullshit on the radio. There was an endless stream of tone deaf mutants mumbling lyrics on the airwaves. These guys all sounded like a cross between Abraham Lincoln and Leon Redbone.
ANYWAYS... This is REAL MUSIC. Paul Westerberg hit the nail on the head in this IRS Cutting Edge video when he boldly proclaims himself as a punk band. Even The Clash's more eclectic but offbeat sounds come off as hokey but definately punk. The punk sound doesn't have to have pounding, throbbing and boring beats to keep it afloat. The punk ethic demands that that first and foremost that its sound be heard. It doesn't matter so much if the meaning is necessarily understood.
Most times these bands are NOT understood. Westerberg himself claimed that his songs barely made any sense. This is what made listening to this band so interesting. There were times when these songs sort of defied logical explanation. But they sounded great.
In time, fans drifted off to create hordes of children, get burried in SUV payments and the lyrics of these brilliant minds faded in the dust. A lot of new fans came of course. But even though this band left an impression many bands didn't follow their lead. As a result we got a lot of predictable sounding drivel.
So these guys were encased in ice literally.
In a lot of ways these guys were very misunderstood. Under all that thrashy noise beat a real heart of powerful intention. They exited with a very quiet sound.

THE DAMNED - NASTY - THE YOUNG ONES APPEARANCE
"CATCH CATCH..... THE HORROR TAXI -- FREEZE FRAME
GONNA DRIVE YOU INSANE!"
This is a clip from THE YOUNG ONES - one of the most innovated BBC comedy shows of all time. The other innovative comedy shows come from the same comedy troupe that produced this one. The COMIC STRIP and of course FULL BOTTOM is absolutely brilliant. Anything with Adrian Edmonson and Nigel Planner is worth watching. These episodes came out in 1983 and I am still watching them. They are still entertaining.
This series was also responsible for breaking up a few marriages. No doubt - the guys love this stuff. Especially if you grew up during this amazing time in music. THE DAMNED popped up on this episode called.... NASTY... The plot involved the boys in the house renting a sex tape and a VCR. The night is interrupted by a parcel which contains a wise cracking vampire from Johanesburg, South Africa and of course the musical act, THE DAMNED, which automatically appears in the kitchen unannounced.
Lots of bad one liners and great upbeat camera angles makes this clip a winner.

CARVEL ICE CREAM - COOKIEPUSS 1983
CLASSIC 1983 COMMERCIAL FOR CARVEL ICE CREAM
When Star Wars was all the rage Tom Carvel, owner of Carvel Ice Cream, had to compete for attention. His answer to intergalatic hijinx was COOKIEPUSS. This stellar ice cream wonder was somewhat baffling to figure out. What exactly was he?
He was delicious of course but other than that it was hard to define.
Tom Carvel, ever the inventor, created CUPIDPUSS. This is a terrible name for a cake. This was obviously inspired by the Star Wars influenced Cookiepuss. The total concept was a complete oxymoron. You couldn't cut a Carvel ice cream cake with a fucking light saber. This thing was hulled straight from the deepest hubs of the ice cream vaults. No kidding, it was almost near impossible to cut one of these things without letting it unthaw for about 45 minutes.
Well, after 25 years. Here he is again kids. Cupidpuss.
Enjoy

THE CHARLATANS UK - DONT WANT TO SEE THE SIGHTS
IS THIS THE VIDEO THAT KILLED METAL?
MTV took a sharp left handed turn when this band came out. The Charlatans UK signaled the end for a somewhat promising format. Shortly after the Charlatans UK came out Warrants "Cherry Pie" video vanished in thin air. The Inspiral Carpets came out with their Madchester pop sound. Then the big heavy hammer came out with Nirvana and everything changed. Pretty much forever. Soon after Cobain and Co. did their little thing on MTV the entire station swtiched over to a hip hop rap format.
This video here is interesting for a number of reasons. It isn't really that fantastic musically or visually. And Tim Burgess looks really young here... just a kid really. Yet this band was enough to get the ball rolling.
The one thing you can say about a lot of these UK bands despite their age is that they could realy articulate well. They could do that vocally, musically and lyrically. I mean REALLY WELL.
I just came out of a show in Detroit where the 40 year old singer bellowed, "Im Pissed Off Again".... and that pretty much is the ENTIRE SONG. Its just repeated about.....50 times in two and a half minutes.
So this song, and this video DOES have some merit.

THE CANDY BUTCHERS - WHAT I WONT GIVE
"articulate slowly -- THE CANDY BUTCHERS"
When I first found Mike Viola and the Candy Butchers it was by accident. We found the EP in a dollar bin and it was recorded in a NYC diner. I figured it would be worth a listen. I was immediately impressed with this disc. This duo rocked out to a crowd of four including the kitchen help in this cramped diner space. But the energy that was delivered was amazing.
It was so memorable that it stuck in my head for the next 8 years. That release is finallly available on Itunes now and I highly suggest giving it a listen. The songs were well constructed and just made some good sense. I really enjoyed it and I found myself going back to it time and time again. Some songs were more memorable than others.
They were featured on David Letterman and by that time their sound was smoothed out quite a bit. The early track, "Bells on a Leper" was a mix of Squeeze meets a bare blazing soul of torment. Still even though some of the lyrics could be bleak the end result was very soulful and powerful. They were interesting.
But the other releases were good too. They never were able to capture that first initial rush I got from that EP. I really discovered gold that hot afternoon in Chicago.

THE DANDY WARHOLS - GOOD MORNING AGAIN
ah those were the days.. when GOOD MORNING came out in 98 I used to blast this in the office. Needless to say nobody knew what I was going on and on about. The multi levelled sound and video tracks are nice. It gets the message across.... that is to say... er.. if there is a message to this song.
There is a silent inner beauty to this track. It is hidden in the song itself. The one thing I adored about the Dandy Warhols was that they never paid attention to anything else that was going on around them. So they always sounded like they just came in from another planet. Even though they were from Portland they had no real connection to the "scene" that was mapped out for them on the American airwaves.
In short, they avoided boredomsville, USA.
Good for them.

THE DANDY WARHOLS - EVERY DAY SHOULD BE A HOLLIDAY INDEED
"The Original Video.. (OST - "There's Something About Mary")"
There is beauty in being odd.
There is even something even hypnotic about watching this band perform. I can't say the same for, "Something About Mary".... seriously... can you? Its just one of the rare comedys these days that doesn't star screen hog Will Farrell.
The claymation is nice. But even more significant is the intentional blur. This is a real throwback to the color graphics on the 4AD label. The Dandy Warhols are not a 4AD band but I enjoy them immensely as they are not afraid to be something unexpected.
Its interesting to see this guy dance and lip synch off key and still do all of own harmonizing.... with himself! Not sure about how their wardrobe works as a whole. It looks like payday at the Salvation Army but yet I cannot take my eyes off the band thanks to all the cool gel lighting. Its got real stage presence.
The sound is catchy too. What else do you need?

THE ARCTIC MONKEYS - LOVE MACHINE LIVE
"getting on with the mad sound......."
This is great to see. Its nice to plug into music on your own terms. I haven't listened to my local stations in MONTHS... and I know if I do I can expect to hear the same songs they've been hauling around for the past twenty years......
The Detroit market seems to push... the band LIVE.. I know, its stupid, but I am in Detroit. This is serious. Let me continue.... They also like to push STONE TEMPLE PILOTS for some very weird reason and a lot of Eddie Veddar rip offs. 89.X for the most part does a terrible job and yes I know they are out of Canada but they have a tremendous influence over... what used to be a great metropolis? (lol) Detroit Michigan.
SO when I find a band like the Arctic Monkeys doing a great new sound of course I am going to latch onto it WITH A SERIOUS FEVER. The news is that this song is a remake of Girls Alouds version. Its still good to listen to and a bit unexpected. The pacing of this video is a bit frenetic but its matching the rythym of the song. Yes its hard on the eyes but carrying on quite well by inventing another visual dialect for the eyes to contend with.
Remember that in the early days everyone complained about the "rapid fire machine gun editing of MTV". This takes that energy and offers up a new version of that. The circling camera movements and the choppy editing really sellls this song. AND ITS GREAT.

Why I Hate SONIC YOUTH
"Sonic Youth Were Generations Apart From Their Idols - Despite What They Claim On Film"
Watching Thurston Moore reminisce about the good ol days with Joey, Dee Dee and Chrissie is enough to gag a magot. I was watching a punk video on the history channel a few weeks back and Thurston told his story with historic acuracy.... well... as accurate as ANYONE who has done thier homework from a Tower Records book department.
Sonic Youth came out in the late 80's and barely made a stir on the campus airwaves. You had to find people who liked them in 87. Even after "EVOL" came out, ( a record I returned for lack of musical likeability ) it took a while for their sound to have any type of recognizable melody to it. To put it frankly you had to be on drugs to really dig this sound, (the drug part eurupted in the early 90s and THEN their sound took off).
But the really awful thing about Moore was watching him pontificate about how great it was to be around Dee Dee and Joey from the Ramones... and more oddly, Patti Smith! Now, maybe what he was babbling about was partly true. I am not in the music business. But the GOLDEN YEARS he is referring to was back in 1976 in New York City in the punk rock scene. Moore is younger than I am and when the punk scene was taking off I was ten years old.
And now I am supposed to suspend belief that Moore and Co. were partying backstage at CBGB's with Patti Smith and the New York Dolls? How fucking ridiculous. So we are supposed to believe that he was a hard rage rocking punk rocker at age six? What horseshit. Seriously.
I wanted to jump through my tv screen and beat the crap out of Thurston Moore as I watched this clip. The entire claim was not only bogus but totally absurd. Patti Smith is about a hundred years old and even when she was considered big news she only had one or two early albums that really made a huge headline with Rolling Stone Magazine.
It was brief.
Hint: In the late 70s there were no Sonic Youth records..... It was Devo man, Clash, Pistols and in America it was the Plasmatics and Blondie.

THE CLASH - SAFE EUROPEAN HOME
'FOOTAGE FROM THE US FESTIVAL IN 1983"
THIS was the most IMPORTANT BAND OF THE DAY !!! This event was hyped up to be the MOST IMPORTANT AMERICAN GIG OF ALL TIME. But its easy to fall under that type of spell. At the time I fell for it. Looking back it was still pretty good. I mean, Van Halen actually parachuted down to land on the stage and kicked off a set.
Kids hitched across the country and some took the bus just to get there. i really felt at the time that I was missing out on some monumental event. And I was.
I mean.. look at these guys.... its still incredible And I like the intro.

Taken from the only Clash film. This was actually hard to find for a long period of time. It has occasionally resurfaced...... It was a psuedo documentary about a kid who works in a XXX theater and gets a gig working as a roadie with the CLASH.
You had to go out of your way to find a video store that carried it. This was a very small and relatively unknown release. It was pursued only by the MOST DIE HARD FANS.

CHICKEN DANCE UBER ALLES
Is this what the Third Reich had in mind after they achieved WORLD DOMINATION? Good God man... !!! What a horrendous and silly minded thought.
Still, after seeing how they abused their power and created so much irreversable destruction. I firmly believe that this could have happened. Imagine walking into a third world disco or a dancing hall and this was all they offered musically speaking.
After seeing the art that came from that period. I wouldn't doubt if this was THE GRAND VISION...... I say that .... with utmost confidence.

"This is not what you think.... its a soundtrack tacked on over the Lawrence Welk Show"
This does look real however. Oddly enough the lyrics for Sister Ray were mumbled on the phone as Edie Sedgwick took her last breath.
This is pretty interesting television and for a second it fooled me. To the best of my knowledge I don't think Lawrence ever created any type of pop music on his show like this. The closest he came was doing a few Beatle tunes.

"WHO THE HELL IS LOU REED !!!???"
"Can You Believe This Type of Response?"
This is the question poised to me from my aunt who grew up in the ... 60's of all things. I was born in the 60's but I never knew who Lou was until much later. As a kid all I knew was Playschool and Top Cat.
Warhol and the Velvets would enter my life much later.
LOU REED AND THE VELVET UNDERGROUND was where it was at as far as I was concerned. It defined a period of art. It also described a time when..... the entire art world was about to crack open and explode its vision all across the universe. Not that its a big deal but that is a far more significant achievement than anything dribbled out of the mouths of mealy singers like the Offspring and ... so many other forgettable crappy bands.
This deliberate stand off between what was accepted and what wasn't was apparent in their sound. Even a few years ago Lou was interviewed about his latest music session on KCRW. He was making music out of a mop handle and a rubber strap -- this was his minimalist instrument. And I thought it was significant enough to mention. Lou did too.
This stuff really did define a period even if it was right or wrong. I think there was a time when early Pink Floyd did this type of "happening" entertainment as well. I liked what the VU biographer said when the street trash, junkies, pop journalists, film makers, and art critics all got together for these events. I don't expect much wisdom to tumble out of the mouths of these junkies but you have to admit that it was interesting.
THE MUSIC MISSION GETS LOST
Today we got professional Wrestling. WHATS THE DIFFERENCE? Its one mans dirt for anothers really. There are a lot of miserable routes available today in which one can entertain ones self. However, they do not have a considerable amount of street quality to them. This stuff made sense because it used a very unique sort of street sensibility.
Confrontation is what made this band interesting. It made a lot of people interesting back in the day. It made Lenny Bruce interesting. It made the Sex Pistols interesting. It made Dice interesting. It made a lot of people interesting. There was a significant amount of destruction centering around these individuals and some people connected to these pop icons died due to their own chaotic direction. I don't suggest that dying for art is a worthy or noble aspiration. But this type of thinking has racked up a very different type of life.
And it continues to fascinate.....

XTC -LAST MINUTE TOM FOOLERY
XTC has an inner genius to make the most serious of subjects look laughable and fool hearty. For the most part the band had total creative control.

VAN HALEN - 1984
"THIS WAS THE GREAT BIG VISION OF ROCK AND ROLL"
There was a time in history - however brief - when rock and roll centered around a BIG atmosphere. Unlike the Goth rock and wrist splitters that came out later Van Halen created its own uplifting outrageous environment.
This is a brief interview with David Lee Roth who lays the deal on the table. He tells the viewers what the band is really about. It is not too complicated but 19-82 - 1984 were magical years for this band. In fact, in a lot of ways they were a better ensemble. The whole carnival atmosphere that surrounded VH meant a lot of amplifiers and a wild stage show. It was thrilling.
The stripped down look that came later couldn't hold a candle to what the band had delivered previously.
Looking back on this clip really spells out a few choice details for me as a fan. I really enjoyed those years and for a while nobody could really top them. I feel the band sort of ended once DLR left on his own.

This may be the final frontier. There is nowhere else for this to really go is there? This clip is actually quite tame compared to the stuff that is shown late at night. There are clips of foul mouthed Rabbi's and school teachers and just disgusting role models from "society".
My particular favorite leans towards the rabbi and the doctor. The doctor clip is pretty funny because he actually breaks his own glasses in a sea of rage.

BEYOND CRUEL: ITS ANTI COMEDY
"LITTLE KID GETS THE BEJEEZUS SCARED OUT OF HIM"
This clip is interesting for one very small and simple reason. This child is taken by surprise and shown something very horrifying... Linda Blair from the, "Exorcist". The child is terrorized and will most likely need some sort of therapy as he grows older.
As a deep thinker I find this very cruel. I studied many forms of spirituality. Before one comes into existence they have knowledge of the sacred and the profane. This ugly apprarition goes against nature. The child can pick up on it that it is not natural. For that reason this clip is very cruel and unusual. Of course as one grows into adulthood and faces many more everyday experiences they become desensitized about the spiritual world. But to a child their world is very different in comparison. They are still tied to the innocent and loving world from which they sprang !!!.. DEEP ENOUGH FOR YA?
Maybe I am reading way too much into this. But still, why would you ever want to terrify a small defenseless child. Its funny for the first two seconds and then you feel terrible for laughing at this clip. But yes, you still feel compelled to watch it again.
I think this one comes from Germany. A country that has a long history of knowing how to treat people.... lol
This is terrible.

JOHN ROCKER - WHERE ARE YE?
"from MID OCTOBER 1999: John Rocker, We Hardly Knew Ye"
This guy kicked up a lot of dust in the late 90's and upset a lot of New Yorkers with his "Strap Hangers" comment, (aimed at subway riders). He also made some semi racist comments about different minorities and landed in controversey in the sports page. More recently his father was reported killed in a freak auto accident.
This guy entertains - no doubt. And he also comes off as somewhat normal in this interview. But nothing could beat the pictures of this guy in the New York Post with his goofy expressions at the camera looking like a right goof.
He almost encouraged hatred and egged people on with his rants. Its entertaining and a bit dangerous. This guy was living life rather loudly. You don't hear much of his antics anymore and baseball will not be the same.... that is until he opens up his big yap again.

"TALK TO THE HAND HOMEGIRL...."
"Is It Real -- Is IT Fake? Is It Really Happening"
Street smart 5 year olds taking to the streets!
This is an amazing clip because this kid is incredibly foul mouthed. He is hypnotic in his verbal delivery. Someone has mentored this kid in the fine arts of bullying and intimidation. If this is a real clip then it reflects this kids environment. In short, its a social workers dream come true.
Just in the news a few a weeks ago some stoners were on CNN caught on tape sneaking a joint to a todler. Then there was something about putting beer in a baby bottle and feeding it to a two year old in our local papers.
Maybe this is just a hoax and no cause for real alarm. But maybe it goes a little deeper than this. Maybe, this is what is happening to our youth. I remember reading about Capone when he was a kid and how he used to mouth off to Navy officials in Brooklyn. Of course they could never give him a proper beating because he would taunt them from behind a very tall fence. This later led to bolder bragging rights. Some of those greater offenses included murder.
It is interesting to see just exactly how this sort of thing starts.
But perhaps a better observation is.... "What are you going to do about it?"

MCDONALDS - 1969
"MCDONALDS - THE MUSICAL !!!"
Why don't they make commercials like this anymore? The new commercials that center around McD's really are not very good. They are rap influenced and hip hop flavored nonsense about how hot the people are eating this... food.
I like the goofy musical versions better. This theme song is familiar they used to run a jingle of it before all the Bob Hope holiday specials in the 1970's. There was a great mood that generally surrounded television advertising back then. It was entertaining.
Nobody is walking around with this suppresed violent tone about them. There are no rap or heavy street themed people in this clip. It comes off looking like the I Love Lucy Show.... And thats good. This shows America as a happy, non-depressing place. That may have not been the case in the grand scheme of things, (Manson went on his killing spree in 1969) but yet the media front painted a glorious picture of happy times.
Speaking of Good Times.. check out the black guy dancing around with the hot mop -- thats John Amos who playsed the dad on Good Times.
